अहो धार्ष्ट्यं महद्दृष्टं जटिलस्याद्य चाद्भुतम् 4.2.87.
Ah, what great audacity and wonder is seen today in this matted-haired one!
एवंभूता भवंत्येव मातापितृविवर्जिताः
Such are those who are bereft of mother and father.
स्वच्छंदचारिणोऽनाथाः सर्वत्र स्वाभिमानिनः
Orphans, acting as they please, proud everywhere.
जामातॄणां स्वभावोयं प्रायशो गर्वभाजनम्
This is the nature of sons-in-law, generally a source of pride.
द्विजराजः स गर्विष्ठो रोहिणीप्रेमनिर्भरः
That king of twice-borns is most arrogant, overflowing with affection for Rohiṇī.
अस्याहं गर्वसर्वस्वं हरिष्याम्येव शूलिनः
I will surely take away all the pride of this trident-bearer.
तथास्याहं करिष्यामि मानहानिं च सर्वतः
Thus I will bring about his total loss of honor.
प्राप्य स्वभवनं देवानाजुहाव सवासवान्
Having reached his own abode, he summoned the gods along with Indra.
भवंतु यज्ञसंभारानानयंतु त्वरान्विताः
Let the sacrificial materials be brought here quickly.
महाक्रतूपद्रष्टारं यज्ञपूरुषमेव च
Bring also the great observer of sacrifices and the very personification of the sacrifice.
प्रावर्तत ततस्तस्य दक्षस्य च महाध्वरः 4.2.87.
Then, the great sacrifice of Daksha was commenced.
अनीश्वरांस्ततो वेधा व्याजं कृत्वा गृहं ययौ
Thereafter, the Creator, making a pretext, went to his house, powerless.
दक्षयज्ञे समायातान्सतीश्वरविवर्जितान्
Those who had come to Daksha’s sacrifice were devoid of the Lord and of Sati.
दक्षस्य हि शुभोदर्कमिच्छन्प्रोवाच चेति वै दधीचिरुवाच
Desiring a favorable outcome for Daksha, Dadhichi spoke these words.
न चास्ति तव सामर्थ्यं क्वापि कस्यापि निश्चितम्
And certainly, you have no ability anywhere, in any matter.
न तादृङ्नेदसि प्रायः क्वापि ज्ञातो महामते
O wise one, you are generally not known to act in such a manner anywhere.
कर्तव्यश्चेत्तदाकार्यः स्याच्चेत्संपत्ति रीदृशी
If something must be done, let it be done; if such prosperity is possible.
साक्षाच्च सर्वे मंत्रा वै साक्षाद्यज्ञपुमानसौ साक्षाद्ब्रह्मा स्वयं चैष भृगुर्वै कर्मकांडवित्
All the mantras are present directly, the very person of the sacrifice is here, Brahma himself is present, and Bhrigu is the knower of ritual acts.
अयं पूषा भगस्त्वेष इयं देवी सरस्वती
Here is Pushan, here is Bhaga, and this is the goddess Sarasvati.
त्वं च दीक्षां शुभां प्राप्तो देव्या च शतरूपया
And you have received the auspicious initiation, together with the goddess of a hundred forms.
स्वयमेव हि कुर्वीत धर्मकार्यं प्रयत्नतः 4.2.87.
One should oneself diligently perform the righteous act.
सप्तविंशतिभिः सार्धं पत्नीभिस्तव कार्यकृत्
With your twenty-seven wives, you have accomplished the work.
दीक्षितो राजसूयस्य दत्तत्रैलोक्यदक्षिणः त्रयोदशमिताभिश्च भार्याभिस्तव कार्यकृत्
Initiated for the Rajasuya, you have given the three worlds as fee, and with your thirteen wives, you have accomplished the work.
हविः कामदुघा सूते कल्पवृक्षः समित्कुशान्
The wish-granting cow yields the oblation, and the wish-fulfilling tree provides the sacred fuel and grass.
विश्वकर्माप्यलंकारान्कुरुतेभ्यागतर्त्विजाम्
Even Vishvakarma prepares ornaments for the priests who have arrived.
स्वयंलक्ष्मीरलंकुर्याद्यावै चात्र सुवासिनीः
Lakshmi herself should adorn the noble women who are present here.
सर्वे सुखाय मे दक्ष वीक्षमाणस्य सर्वतः
O Daksha, as I look everywhere, all things bring me happiness.
जीवहीनो यथा देहो भूषितोपि न शोभते
Just as a body without life does not shine, even if adorned.
इत्थं दधीचिवचनं श्रुत्वा दक्षः प्रजापतिः
Having heard these words of Dadhichi, Daksha, the lord of progeny,
पूर्वस्तुत्याति संहृष्टो दृष्टो योसौ दधीचिना
Was delighted by the previous praise, seeing that one, Dadhichi.
