स्वेषु स्वेषु च धर्मेषु कच्चिद्वर्णाश्रमास्तथा
Are the classes and stages of life steadfast in their own duties?
धूर्जटिः परिपृछ्येति हृष्टं वैकुंठनायकम्। ब्रह्माणं चापि पप्रच्छ ब्राह्मं तेजः समेधते ।। 4.2.87.
Dhūrjaṭi, thus inquiring, joyfully addressed the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha, and also questioned Brahmā, whose brāhmaṇic splendor was radiant.
सत्यमस्खलितं कच्चिदस्ति त्रैलोक्यमंडपे
Is truth, unblemished, present in the assembly of the three worlds?
इंद्रादयः सुराः कच्चित्स्वेषु स्वेषु पुरेष्वहो
Are Indra and the other gods abiding in their own cities?
प्रत्येकं परिपृच्छयेशः सर्वानित्थं कृतादरान्
The Lord, with respect, asked each one in this way.
विससर्जाथ तान्सर्वान्देवः सौधं समाविशत्
Then the god dismissed them all and entered his palace.
मध्ये मार्गं स चिंतोभूद्दक्षः सत्याः पिता तदा
In the midst of the path, Dakṣa, the truthful father, became lost in thought.
अतीव क्षुब्धचित्तोभून्मंदराघाततोऽब्धिवत्
His mind was greatly agitated, like the ocean struck by Mandara.
अतीवगर्वितो जातः सती मे प्राप्य कन्यकाम्
He became exceedingly proud, having obtained Satī as his daughter.
किं वंश्यस्त्वेष किं गोत्रः किं देशीयः किमात्मकः
What is your lineage? What is your family? From what country are you? Of what nature are you?
न प्रायशस्तपस्व्येष क्व तपः क्वास्त्रधारणम्
He is not generally devoted to austerity; where is his penance, where is his mastery of weapons?
असौ न ब्रह्मचारी स्यात्कृतपाणिग्रह स्थितिः 4.2.87.
He cannot be called a celibate, for he has entered into the state of marriage.
न ब्राह्मणोभवत्येष यतो वेदो न वेत्त्यमुम्
He is not a Brāhmaṇa, for he does not know the Veda.
क्षतात्संत्राणनात्क्षत्रं तत्क्वास्मिन्प्रलयप्रिये
Kṣatra is so called from protecting the wounded; where is that here, in this one fond of dissolution?
शूद्रोपि न भवेत्प्रायो नागयज्ञोपवीतवान्
He is not even a Śūdra, for he does not wear the sacred thread of the Nāgas.
सर्वः प्रकृत्या ज्ञायेत स्थाणुः प्रकृतिवर्जितः
Everyone is to be known by their nature; the motionless one is devoid of nature.
योषापि न भवेदेष यतोसौ श्मश्रुलाननः
He cannot even be a woman, for his face is adorned with a beard and mustache.
बालोपि न भवत्येष यतोऽयं बहुवार्षिकः
He is not a child either, for he is many years old.
अतो युवत्वं संभाव्यं नात्र नूनं चिरंतने
Therefore, youthfulness may be supposed, but certainly not ancientness here.
ब्रह्मादीन्संहरेत्प्रांते तथापि च न पातकी
Even if he destroys Brahmā and the others at the end, still he is not a sinner.
अहो धार्ष्ट्यं महद्दृष्टं जटिलस्याद्य चाद्भुतम् 4.2.87.
Ah, what great audacity and wonder is seen today in this matted-haired one!
एवंभूता भवंत्येव मातापितृविवर्जिताः
Such are those who are bereft of mother and father.
स्वच्छंदचारिणोऽनाथाः सर्वत्र स्वाभिमानिनः
Orphans, acting as they please, proud everywhere.
जामातॄणां स्वभावोयं प्रायशो गर्वभाजनम्
This is the nature of sons-in-law, generally a source of pride.
द्विजराजः स गर्विष्ठो रोहिणीप्रेमनिर्भरः
That king of twice-borns is most arrogant, overflowing with affection for Rohiṇī.
अस्याहं गर्वसर्वस्वं हरिष्याम्येव शूलिनः
I will surely take away all the pride of this trident-bearer.
तथास्याहं करिष्यामि मानहानिं च सर्वतः
Thus I will bring about his total loss of honor.
प्राप्य स्वभवनं देवानाजुहाव सवासवान्
Having reached his own abode, he summoned the gods along with Indra.
भवंतु यज्ञसंभारानानयंतु त्वरान्विताः
Let the sacrificial materials be brought here quickly.
महाक्रतूपद्रष्टारं यज्ञपूरुषमेव च
Bring also the great observer of sacrifices and the very personification of the sacrifice.
