जित्वा देवान्रणे सर्वानिंद्रादीन्मृगलोचने
Having conquered all the gods in battle, including Indra, O doe-eyed one,
आधायांके त्रिशूलं स्वे सुष्वापेति प्रलप्य सः
He, murmuring 'Lay the trident on your lap and sleep,'
वरं स्मरंती सा गौर्या विद्याधरकुमारिका
That Vidyadhara maiden, remembering her boon, with Gauri in mind,
आहूय तं नरवरं वरं सर्वांगसुंदरम्
Summoned that best of men, beautiful in every limb, as her boon.
शूलं तदंकादादाय गृहाणेमं जहि द्रुतम्
Taking the trident from her lap, she said, 'Take this and quickly strike him.'
समादाय महाबाहुः स तदा मित्रजिन्नृपः
Then that mighty-armed, friend-conquering king took it up.
वामपादप्रहारेण तमाताड्य स निर्भयः
With a blow from his left foot, he struck him, fearless.
जर्गाद तिष्ठ रे दुष्ट कन्याधर्षणलालस
He shouted, 'Stand, you wicked one, eager to violate a maiden!'
इति संश्रुत्य संभ्रांत उत्थाय स दनोः सुतः 4.2.82.
Hearing this, the son of Danu, alarmed, rose up.
त्वया कपटरूपेण बलिनः कैटभादयः 4.2.82.
By you, in a deceptive form, the powerful ones like Kaitabha were slain.
निजघान महाबाहुः स च प्राणाञ्जहौ क्षणात् 4.2.82.
That mighty-armed one struck him down and instantly took his life.
अपि स्मृत्वा पुरीं यां वै काशीं त्रैलोक्यकांक्षिताम् ।। 4.2.82.
Even remembering that city, Kashi, desired by the three worlds.
इति राज्ञोदिता राज्ञी प्रवक्तुमुपचक्रमे 4.2.82.
Thus addressed by the king, the queen began to speak.
राज्ञ्युवाच अवधेहि धरानाथ कथयामि यथातथम्
The queen said: Listen, lord of the earth, I will tell you everything as it happened.
पुरा पुरः श्रीदपत्न्याः श्रीमुख्या ब्रह्मसूनुना
Long ago, before the wife of Shri, the chief among women, by the son of Brahma,
चीर्णं चाथ तया देव्या पुत्रोभून्नलकूबरः
And then, by that goddess, a son was born—Nalakubara.
विधिनाप्यत्र संपूज्या गौरी सर्वविधानवित्
Here, Gauri must be worshipped according to prescribed rites by one who knows all the procedures.
मार्गशीर्ष तृतीयायां शुक्लायां कलशोपरि
On the bright third day of the month of Margashirsha, above a pot,
अविच्छिन्नं नवीनं च रजनीरागरंजितम्
Place an unbroken, fresh branch tinged with the color of night-blooming saffron.
तस्योपरि शुभं पद्मं रविरश्मिविकासितम्
Upon that, set an auspicious lotus, opened by the rays of the sun.
विधिं संपूजयेद्भक्त्या रत्नपट्टाबंरादिभिः
One should worship the prescribed form with devotion, using jeweled cloths and other ornaments.
सुगंधैश्चंदनाद्यैश्च कर्पूर मृगनाभिभिः
With fragrant substances such as sandalwood, camphor, and musk,
धूपैरगुरुमुख्यैश्च रम्ये कुसुममंडपे 4.2.83.
And with incense, chiefly agarwood, in a beautiful pavilion adorned with flowers.
हस्तमात्रमिते कुंडे जातवेदस इत्यृचा
In a fire-pit the size of a hand, recite the Jatavedasa hymn.
सहस्रकमलानां च स्मेराणां स्वयमेव हि
And offer a thousand smiling lotuses, by oneself.
दद्यादाचार्यवर्याय सालंकारां सलक्षणाम्
Give to the chief teacher a fully adorned and auspicious one.
प्रातःस्नात्वा चतुर्थ्यां च संपूज्याचार्यमादृतः
After bathing in the morning on the fourth day, respectfully worship the teacher.
सोपस्करां च तां मृर्तिमाचार्याय निवेदयेत्
Present to the teacher that image, complete with its accessories.
नमो विश्वविधानज्ञे विधे विविधकारिणि
Salutations to the knower of the world's order, to the creator, the doer of many deeds.
सहसं भोजयित्वाथ द्विजानां भक्तिपूर्वकम्
Then, having fed the twice-born with devotion,
