Hearing the words spoken by the beloved, she became distressed with sorrow.
Then, on another day, that hawk came early in the morning.
When the sun had gone to the peak of the western mountain and the bird had departed,
Master, this is not the time to go out; the time is still far off.
While you live, nothing on earth is difficult to obtain.
If a man protects himself, whether by wife or by wealth,
This self is dear, this self is kin, this self is the greatest wealth.
As long as there is well-being in oneself, so long is there well-being in the three worlds.
But the well-being that is without fame—better than that well-being is death.
Therefore, having heard the path of policy, master, depart from this place.
Though thus addressed by his wise wife, the dove,
Then, at dawn, the powerful hawk arrived there.
Having stayed there for a few days, the hawk of great intelligence
Either fight, fool, or depart at my command.
You two are together, and I am alone; victory or defeat is uncertain. For the sake of your place, fight bravely—heaven or hardship awaits.
Those of great intellect who strive, relying on many means,
Thus, as spoken by the hawk, and urged on by his wife, the bird—
Hungry and thirsty, he was then seized by the powerful hawk.
Taking them both, the hawk swiftly soared into the sky.
Then, his wise wife uttered a plaintive cry there.
Now I will tell you what is beneficial; do it without hesitation.
As long as I am in his mouth, and while he is still in the air, not yet on the ground—
Pressed hard by the hawk’s foot, she cried out loudly again and again.
And by that cry, she was released from the beak’s grip.
Even in misfortune, the wise never abandon effort anywhere.
Where else is such a marvelous escape from the jaws of death for both?
Therefore, with perseverance, effort always bears fruit according to destiny.
Then, by the force of time, those two fell upon the bank of the Sarayu.
Where, for creatures who have died, attaining Kashi is certain.
A place of many kinds of knowledge, a vessel of skill in the arts.
