बलानि बलिनां ताभिर्दानवानां स्वलीलया
With these powers, she easily subdues the strength of the mighty demons.
तावत्स दुर्गो दैत्येंद्रः पयोदांतरतो बली
Meanwhile, the powerful Daitya king Durga remained within the ocean.
ततो भगवती देवी शोषणास्त्र प्रयोगतः
Then the blessed Goddess, by employing the drying weapon,
योषिन्मनोरथवती षंढं प्राप्य यथाऽफला
Like a woman whose desire is unfulfilled upon encountering a eunuch,
अथ दैतेयराजेन बाहुसंकर्षकोपतः
Then, by the Daitya king, in anger from the pulling of his arms,
अद्रेः शृंगं सुविस्तीर्णमापतत्परिवीक्ष्य सा
She saw the broad peak of the mountain falling down.
आंदोल्य मौलिमसकृत्कुंडलाभ्यां विराजितम् 4.2.72.
The crown, repeatedly swaying, adorned with earrings, shone brightly.
शैलाकारं तमायांतं दृष्ट्वा भगवती गजम्
Seeing the elephant approaching in the form of a mountain, the blessed Goddess,
ततोत्यंतं स चीत्कृत्य देव्याकृत्तकरःकरी
Then, with a loud cry, he, whose hand had been severed by the Goddess,
अचलां सचलां सर्वां स चक्रे सुरघाततः
He made all that was immovable and movable tremble, by striking the gods.
निःश्वासवातनिहताः पेतुरुर्व्यां महाद्रुमाः
Struck down by the breath and wind, the great trees fell to the earth.
महामहिषरूपेण तेन त्रैलोक्यमंडपः
In the form of a great buffalo, he filled the pavilion of the three worlds.
ब्रह्मांडमप्यकांडेन तद्भयेन समाकुलम्
Even the cosmic egg, in its entirety, was filled with fear because of him.
त्रिशूलघातविभ्रांतः पतित्वा पुनरुत्थितः
Struck by the trident, he was bewildered, fell down, and then rose again.
स दुर्गो नितरां दुर्गो विबभौ समराजिरे
That fortress was truly formidable, shining brilliantly on the battlefield.
अथ तूर्णं स दैत्येंद्रस्तां देवीं रणकोविदाम्
Then, swiftly, the lord of the Daityas confronted that goddess, skilled in the art of war.
ततो नभोंगणाद्दूरात्क्षिप्त्वा स जगदंबिकाम् 4.2.72.
Thereupon, from a great distance in the sky, he hurled the World-Mother.
अथांतरिक्षगा देवी तस्य मार्गणमध्यगा
Then the goddess, moving through the mid-air, entered the path of his arrow.
तं विधूय शरत्रातं निजेषु निकरैरलम्
Shaking off that arrow, she overwhelmed him with her own countless shafts.
हृदि विद्धस्तया देव्या स च तेन महेषुणा
Struck in the heart by the goddess with that mighty arrow, he fell.
महारुधिरधाराभिः स्रवंतीं च प्रवर्तयन्
He began to pour forth streams of blood in great torrents.
देवदुंदुभयो नेदुः प्रहृष्टानि जगंति च
The divine drums resounded, and the worlds rejoiced.
पुष्पवृष्टिं प्रकुर्वंतः प्राप्ता देवा महर्षिभिः
The gods, together with the great sages, arrived, showering flowers.
महेश्वर महाशक्ते दैत्यद्रुमकुठारके
O Great Lord, O Supreme Power, O destroyer of the Daitya-tree,
त्रैलोक्यव्यापिनि शिवे शंखचक्रगदाधरि
O Śiva, pervader of the three worlds, bearer of conch, discus, and mace,
हंसयाने नमस्तुभ्यं सर्वसृष्टिविधायिनि
O you who ride the swan, we bow to you, creator of all creation.
त्वमैंद्री त्वं च कौबेरी वायवी त्वं त्वमंबुपा 4.2.72.
You are Indrāṇī, you are Kubera's consort, you are Vāyu's power, and you are the mistress of waters.
शशांककौमुदी त्वं च सौरी शक्तिस्त्वमेव च
You are the moonlight of the full moon, you are Sūrya's energy, and you alone are the power.
त्वं गौरी त्वं च सावित्री त्वं गायत्री सरस्वती
You are Gaurī, you are Sāvitrī, you are Gāyatrī, and Sarasvatī.
चेतः स्वरूपिणी त्वं वै त्वं सर्वेंद्रियरूपिणी
You are the very form of consciousness, you are the embodiment of all the senses.
