पद्मरागेंद्रनीलानां शालीनाः शालभंजिकाः
With pillars and statues made of ruby and sapphire,
स्फुरत्स्फटिकनिर्माण श्लक्ष्ण पद्मशिलातले
On smooth lotus-stone floors, crafted from shining crystal,
आरक्तपीतमंजिष्ठ नीलकिर्मीरवर्णकैः
With hues of deep red, yellow, madder, and the best blue,
दृक्पिच्छिला विलोक्यंते माणिक्यस्तंभराजयः
Pillars of rubies, their royal brilliance, are seen with the eye, slippery to the gaze,
रत्नाकरेभ्यः सर्वेभ्यो गणा रत्नोच्चयान्बहून्
From all the jewel-oceans, hosts bring many heaps of gems,
यत्र पातालतलतो नागानां कोशवेश्मतः
Where, from the surface of the netherworld, the treasures of the nāgas are stored,
शिवभक्तः स्वयं यत्र पौलस्त्यः स्वद्रिकूटतः 4.2.66.
has come,
प्रासादनिर्मितिं श्रुत्वा भक्ता द्वीपांतरस्थिताः
Hearing of the construction of the palace, devotees dwelling on other islands,
चिंतामणिः स्वयं यत्र कमर्णे विश्वकर्मणे
Where the wish-fulfilling gem itself is for the divine architect Viśvakarman,
नानावर्णपताकाश्च यत्र कल्पमहीरुहः
Where there are trees of paradise, adorned with banners of many colors,
अब्धयो यत्र सततं दधिक्षीरेक्षुसर्पिषाम्
Where the oceans always flow with curd, milk, sugarcane juice, and clarified butter,
यत्र कामदुघा नित्यं स्नपयेन्मधुधारया
Where the wish-fulfilling cows constantly bathe with streams of honey,
गंधसाररसैर्यं च सेवते मलयाचलः
And the Malaya mountain serves with fragrant, essential juices,
इत्याद्य पूर्वं यत्रास्ति प्रत्यहं शंकरालये
Thus, all this and more exists every day in the abode of Śaṅkara.
इति तस्य समृद्धिं तां दृष्ट्वा जामातुरद्रिराट
Thus, seeing that prosperity of his son-in-law, the king of the mountains—
तस्मै कार्पटिकायाथ स दत्त्वा पारितोषिकम्
He then gave a reward to that mendicant.
उवाचेति मनस्येव विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनः 4.2.66.
With eyes wide in astonishment, he spoke thus, even as he pondered in his mind.
यस्य देशो न विदितो यस्तु वृत्तिपराङ्मुखः 4.2.66.
One whose land is unknown, and who turns away from earning a livelihood—
सुपर्वणि सुपात्राय सुताथ श्रद्धयाधिकम् 4.2.66.
On an auspicious day, to a worthy recipient, and with utmost faith, a daughter—
प्रणम्य दंडवद्भूमौ कृतांजलिपुटौ गणौ 4.2.66.
Bowing down flat upon the ground, with hands joined in reverence, the attendants—
उमा श्रुत्येति संहृष्टा कदंबकुसुमश्रियम् 4.2.66.
Hearing this, Umā was delighted, radiant as a cluster of kadamba flowers.
श्रुत्वा शैलेश माहात्म्यं श्रद्धया परया नरः
Whoever hears, with supreme faith, the greatness of the Lord of the Mountain—
रत्नभूतं महालिंगं यत्काश्यां परिवर्ण्यते
The great liṅga made of jewels, which is described at Kāśī—
कोस्य लिंगस्य महिमा केनैतच्च प्रतिष्ठितम्
Whose liṅga is this, what is its greatness, and by whom was it established?
रत्नेश्वरस्य माहात्म्यं कथयिष्यामि ते मुने
I shall tell you, O sage, the greatness of Ratneśvara.
श्रुतं नामापि लिंगस्य यस्य जन्मत्रयार्जितम्
Even the name of that liṅga, which is earned over three lifetimes, is heard.
शैलराजेन रत्नानि यानि पुंजीकृतान्यहो
The jewels that were amassed by the king of the mountains—indeed,
सर्वरत्नमयं लिंगं जातं तत्सुकृतात्मनः
From them, a liṅga made entirely of all jewels was formed, by one whose soul was virtuous.
तल्लिंगदर्शनादेव ज्ञानरत्नमवाप्यते
Merely by seeing that liṅga, one attains the jewel of knowledge.
यत्र रत्नमयं लिंगमाविर्भूतं स्वयं मुने
Where the jewel-formed liṅga manifested itself, O sage—
