एकदाद्रींद्रमालोक्य मेना संहृष्टमानसम्
Once, seeing the lord of the mountains, Menā's heart was filled with joy.
विवाहसमयादूर्ध्वं तस्या गौर्या गिरीश्वर
After the time of the wedding, for that Gaurī, O lord of the mountains—
स वृषेंद्रगतिर्देवो भस्मोरग विभूषणः
That god, adorned with ashes and serpents, went to the lord of bulls.
अष्टौ या मातरो दृष्टा ब्राह्मी प्रभृतयः प्रिय
The eight mothers, beginning with Brāhmī, were seen, O dear one.
तस्यैकस्य न कोप्यन्योस्त्यद्वितीयस्य शूलिनः
Of them, there is no one else, no second, for the trident-bearer.
तस्याः प्रियाया वाक्येन तदपत्यप्रियो गिरिः
By the words of his beloved, the mountain became fond of her offspring.
नितरां बाधते प्रेम तददृष्ट्यग्निदूषितम् ।।4.2.66.
Love torments him deeply, tainted by the fire of her absence.
यदा प्रभृति सा गौरी निर्गता मम सद्मतः
From the time that Gaurī departed from my abode,
तदालापामृतधयौ न मे शब्दग्रहौ प्रिये
Drinking the nectar of her speech, my ears no longer grasp any other sound, dear one.
जैवातृकी यतोह्नः स्याद्दूरीभूता दृशोर्मम
Since that day, my eyes have become distant from all else, as if by a natural bond.
इत्युक्त्वादाय रत्नानि वासांसि विविधानि च
Having said this, he took the jewels and various garments.
अगस्त्य उवाच कानि कानि च रत्नानि कियंत्यपि च षण्मुख
Agastya said: What kinds of jewels are there, and how many, O Shanmukha?
तुला मुक्ताफलानां तु कोटिद्वय परीमिताः
The measure of pearls is two crores by weight.
नवलक्षाधिकं विप्र षडस्राणां सुतेजसाम्
O Brahmin, the radiant six-faced gems exceed nine lakhs.
कोटयः पद्मरागाणां पंचावैहि तुला मुने
O sage, the rubies are five crores by weight.
तथा गोमेद रत्नानां तुलालक्षमिता मुनै
Likewise, the gomeda gems are measured by the scale, O sage.
गरुडोद्गाररत्नानां तुलाः प्रयुतसंमिताः 4.2.66.
The garuda-emitted gems are measured as forty lakhs by weight.
अष्टांगाभरणानां च संख्या कर्तुं न शक्यते
The number of eightfold ornaments cannot be determined.
चामराणि च भूयांसि द्रव्याण्यामोदवंति च
There are many yak-tail fans and fragrant substances.
सर्वाण्यपि समादाय प्रतस्थे भूधरेश्वरः
Having gathered all these, the lord of the mountains set forth.
अनेकरत्ननिचयैः खचिताऽखिलभूमिकाम्
The entire earth was adorned with heaps of countless jewels.
सौधाग्रविविधस्वर्णकलशोज्वलदिङ्मुखाम्
The directions shone with golden pots of various kinds atop mansions.
महासिद्ध्यष्टकस्यापि क्रीडाभवनमद्भुतम्
Even the wondrous palace for the play of the eight great siddhis.
इति काशीसमृद्धिं स विलोक्याभूद्विलज्जितः
Thus, seeing the prosperity of Kashi, he became utterly ashamed.
प्रासादेषु प्रतोलीषु प्राकारेषु गृहेषु च
In palaces, avenues, ramparts, and houses,
मणिमाणिक्यरत्नानामुच्छलच्चारुरोचिषाम्
The radiant brilliance of gems, jewels, and precious stones shone forth.
द्यावाभूम्योरंतरालं तथेति समवैम्यहम् 4.2.66.
I understand that the space between heaven and earth is just so.
अपि वैकुंठभुवने नेतरस्येह का कथा
Even in Vaikuntha's realm, there is no comparison; what then of other places here?
तावत्कार्पटिकः कश्चित्तल्लोचनपथं गतः
Meanwhile, a certain ascetic came into their sight.
स्वपुरोदंतमाख्याहि किमपूर्वमिहाध्वग
Tell us, O traveler, what new and unheard-of thing has happened before you?
