शाणेन मणिवल्लीढा कृशाप्यायादनर्घताम्
Though thin, she shone with inestimable worth, polished like a gem by the whetstone.
निरीक्ष्य तां तपस्यंतीं विधिः संशुद्धमानसाम्
Seeing her engaged in penance, her mind purified,
सा चतुर्वक्त्रमालोक्य हंसयानोपरिस्थितम् 4.2.59.
She beheld the Four-faced One, seated above a swan vehicle.
सर्वेभ्यः पावनेभ्योपि कुरु मामतिपावनीम्
She said, 'Make me even purer than all that is purifying.'
स्रष्टा तदिष्टमाकर्ण्य नितरां तुष्टमानसः
The Creator, hearing that desired request, became exceedingly pleased in his mind.
तेभ्यः पवित्रमतुलं त्वमेधि वरतो मम
To you I grant, by my boon, the purest and incomparable sanctity.
तिस्रः कोट्योऽर्धकोटी च संति तीर्थानि कन्यके
There are three crores and half a crore of sacred fords, O maiden.
तानि सर्वाणि तीर्थानि त्वत्तनौ प्रतिलोम वै
All those sacred fords are indeed present, in reverse order, upon your body.
इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे वेधाः सापि निर्धूतकल्मषा
Having spoken thus, the Creator vanished, and she too became free from all sin.
कदाचित्तां समालोक्य खेलंतीमुटजाजिरे
Once, seeing her playing in the hut's courtyard—
क्रीतः स्वरूपसंपत्त्या त्वयाहं देहि मे रहः
I am captivated by your beauty and form; grant me your intimacy.
नितरां बाधते कामस्त्वत्कृते मां सुलोचने
Desire for you torments me greatly, O beautiful-eyed one.
उवाच सा पिता दाता तं प्रार्थय सुदुर्मते 4.2.59.
Her father, the giver, said to him: 'Ask for her, O foolish one.'
निशम्येति वचो धर्मो भाविनोर्थस्य गौरवात्
Hearing these words, Dharma, out of respect for the destined matter—
गांधर्वेण विवाहेन कुरु मे त्वं समीहितम्
Through a Gandharva marriage, fulfill my wish.
इति निर्बंधवद्वाक्यं सा निशम्य कुमारिका
Hearing such insistent words, the maiden—
अरे जडमते मा त्वं पुनर्ब्रूहीति याह्यतः
'O dull-witted one, do not speak thus again; go from here!'
ततः शशाप तं बाला प्रबला तपसो बलात्
Then the girl, empowered by the strength of her austerity, cursed him.
इति शप्तस्तया सोथ तां शशाप क्रुधान्वितः
Thus cursed by her, he too, filled with anger, cursed her.
अविमुक्ते महाक्षेत्रे ख्यातो धर्मनदो महान्
In Avimukta, the great holy place, the great river Dharmanada is renowned.
साप्याह पितरं त्रस्ता स्वशिलात्वस्य कारणम्
Frightened, she told her father the reason for her becoming a stone.
मा भैः पुत्रि करिष्यामि तव सर्वं शुभोदयम्
'Do not fear, daughter; I shall bring about all auspiciousness for you.'
चंद्रोदयमनुप्राप्य द्रवीभूततनुस्ततः 4.2.59.
Having reached the rise of the moon, his body then became liquid.
महापापांधतमसं किरणाख्या तरंगिणी 4.2.59.
The river named Kiraṇā, with waves, is the great darkness of sin.
आदौ धर्मनदः पुण्यो मिश्रितो धूतपापया
At first, the river of righteousness is pure, mingled with one who has washed away sin.
ततोपि मिलितागत्य किरणा रविणैधिता
Then, coming together, the rays heated by the sun arrive.
स्नात्वा पंचनदे तीर्थे कृत्वा च पितृतर्पणम् 4.2.59.
After bathing at the ford of the five rivers and making offerings to the ancestors,
पंचकूर्चेन पीतेन यात्र शुद्धिरुदाहृता 4.2.59.
Purification is declared by drinking with the five blades of sacred grass.
बिंदुतीर्थे नरो दत्त्वा कांचनं कृष्णलोन्मितम् 4.2.59.
At the Bindutīrtha, if a man gives gold measured with a black iron weight,
स्कंद उवाच इदानीं कथयिष्यामि माधवाविष्कृतिं पराम्
Skanda said: Now I shall tell of the supreme manifestation of Mādhava.
