मुनयः सर्व एवैते यूयं शृणुत मद्वचः
All these sages, and you as well, listen to my words.
सांप्रतं मामको यज्ञो युक्तः स्यान्मुनिसत्तमाः
O best of sages, now my sacrifice is ready.
सांप्रतं कुरु तं यत्नान्मा विलंबं वृथा कृथाः
Now, perform it with effort; do not delay in vain.
अगस्त्य उवाच नानासंभारमधुरं कृतसर्वस्वदक्षिणम्
Agastya said: It was prepared with various ingredients, delightful, and all fees were duly given.
नानाविधेन दानेन मुनिसंतोषहर्षकृत्
By giving various kinds of gifts, he brought joy and satisfaction to the sages.
तेषु विश्वेषु यातेषु पूजितेषु गृहान्स्वकान् 2.8.4.
When all those deities had departed, having been duly worshipped, they returned to their own abodes.
तेन यज्ञेन विधिवद्विहितेन नरेश्वरः
With that sacrifice, performed according to proper rites, the king—lord of men—
तत्रांतरे समभ्यायान्मुनिर्यमवतां वरः
At that moment, the best among ascetics, Yama, arrived there.
दक्षिणार्थं गुरोर्द्धीमान्पावितुं तं नरेश्वरम्
Wise and intent on purifying the king, he came to receive the sacrificial fee for the preceptor.
मद्दक्षिणेति गुरुणा निर्बन्धाद्याचितो रुषा रघुं भूपालतिलकं दत्तसर्वस्वदक्षिणम्
Pressed insistently by the preceptor, who said, 'Give me my fee,' Raghu, the jewel among kings, gave away all his possessions as the sacrificial gift.
तमागतमभिप्रेत्य रघुरादरतस्तदा सपर्य्यासीत्तस्य सर्वा मृत्पात्रविहितक्रिया
When he arrived, Raghu respectfully welcomed him and performed all the prescribed rites for him with vessels made of clay.
पूजासंभारमालोक्य तादृशं तं मुनीश्वरः उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं वाक्यज्ञानविशारदः
Seeing such arrangements for worship, the great sage, skilled in the knowledge of words, spoke sweet words.
गुर्वर्थाहरणायैव दत्तसर्वस्वदक्षिणम्
He had given away all his possessions solely for the sake of the preceptor's fee.
क्षणं ध्यात्वाऽब्रवीदेनं विनयाद्विहितांजलिः
After meditating for a moment, he addressed him with humility, his hands joined in reverence.
यावद्यतिष्ये भगवन्भवदर्थार्थमुच्चकैः ।। 2.8.4.
O revered one, as long as I am able, I will strive with all my might for your sake.
प्रतस्थे च रघुस्तत्र कुबेरविजिगीषया
Then Raghu set out there, intent on conquering Kubera.
तमायांतं कुबेरोऽथ विज्ञाप्य वचनोदितैः
As he approached, Kubera, having been informed by words, understood.
स्वर्णवृष्टिरभूद्यत्र सा स्वर्णखनिरुत्तमा
There, a shower of gold occurred, and that was the finest of gold mines.
तस्मै समर्पयामास तां रघुः खनिमुत्तमाम्
Raghu offered that excellent mine to him.
राज्ञे निवेदयामास सर्वमन्यद्गुणाधिकः
He reported everything else, superior in quality, to the king.
इयं स्वर्णखनिस्तूर्णं मनोभीष्टफलप्रदा
This gold mine quickly grants the fruits one desires in their heart.
भूयादत्र परं तीर्थं सर्वपापहरं सदा
May there always be here a supreme holy place, forever removing all sins.
वैशाखे शुक्लद्वादश्यां यात्रा सांवत्सरी स्मृता
The annual festival is observed on the twelfth day of the bright half of Vaiśākha.
प्रतस्थे निजकार्यार्थे गुरोराश्रममुत्सुकः
Eager for his own purpose, he set out for the teacher’s hermitage.
राजा स कृतकृत्योऽथ शेषं संगृह्य तद्धनम् 2.8.4.
Then the king, his task accomplished, gathered the remaining wealth.
एवं स्वर्णखनेर्जातं माहात्म्यं च मुनीश्वरात्
Thus was the greatness of the gold mine revealed by the eminent sage.
विश्वामित्रो निजं शिष्यं कौत्सं क्रोधेन तादृशम्
Viśvāmitra, in anger, addressed his own disciple Kautsa, who was in such a state.
दुष्प्राप्यमर्थं यत्नेन बहु प्रार्थितवांस्तदा
At that time, he had earnestly requested a difficult-to-obtain object many times.
विश्वामित्रो मुनिश्रेष्ठः स दिव्यज्ञानलोचनः
Viśvāmitra, the foremost of sages, endowed with divine knowledge,
निजाश्रमे तपो दुर्गं चकार प्रयतो व्रती
In his own hermitage, the devoted ascetic undertook severe austerities.
