पीततद्गीतपीयूष मृगपूगैरुपासितम्
Having drunk the nectar of his song, he was worshipped by herds of deer.
वृक्षैरपि पतत्पुष्पच्छलैःकृतसमर्चनम् 4.2.58.
Even the trees honored him with showers of falling flowers.
शिष्यं विनयकीर्तिं तं महाविनयभूषणम्
That disciple, Vinayakīrti, adorned with great humility.
अनादिसिद्धः संसारः कर्तृकर्मविवर्जितः
Samsāra is beginningless and perfected, devoid of agent and action.
ब्रह्मादिस्तंबपर्यंतं यावद्देहनिबंधनम्
From Brahmā down to the pillars, as far as the bondage of the body.
यद्ब्रह्मविष्णुरुद्राद्यास्तथाख्या देहिनामिमाः
Those called Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Rudra, and others, likewise these embodied beings.
देहो यथा स्मदादीनां स्वकालेन विलीयते
Just as the body of myself and others dissolves in its own time,
विचार्यमाणे देहेस्मिन्नकिंचिदधिकं क्वचित्
When this body is examined, there is nothing extra anywhere.
निजाहारपरीमाणं प्राप्य सर्वोपि देहभृत्
Every embodied being attains only the measure of sustenance proper to itself.
यथा वितृषिताः स्याम पीत्वा पेयं मुदा वयम्
Just as, having drunk what is to be drunk with delight, we become free from thirst,
संतु नार्यः सहस्राणि रूपलावण्यभूमयः 4.2.58.
Let there be thousands of women, sources of beauty and charm.
अश्वाः परः शताः संतु संत्वनेकेप्यनेकषाः
Let there be hundreds of excellent horses, and many of many kinds.
पर्यंकशायिनां स्वापे सुखं यदुपपद्यते
The happiness that comes to those sleeping on couches,
यथैव मरणाद्भीतिरस्मदादि वपुष्मताम्
Just as there is fear of death for us and others who possess bodies,
सर्वेतनुभृतस्तुल्या यदि बुद्ध्या विचार्यते
If considered with understanding, all embodied beings are equal.
धर्मो जीवदया तुल्यो न क्वापि जगतीतले
Compassion for living beings is the same as righteousness; nowhere on earth is it otherwise.
एकस्मिन्रक्षिते जीवे त्रैलोक्यं रक्षितं भवेत्
By protecting a single living being, the three worlds would be protected.
अहिंसा परमो धर्म इहोक्तः पूर्वसूरिभिः
Nonviolence is declared to be the highest duty here by the ancient sages.
न हिंसा सदृशं पापं त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे
There is no sin like violence in the three worlds, among moving and unmoving beings.
संति दानान्यनेकानि किं तैस्तुच्छ फलप्रदैः
There are many kinds of gifts, but what use are those that yield trivial results?
इह चत्वारि दानानि प्रोक्तानि परमर्षिभिः 4.2.58.
Here, four kinds of gifts have been taught by the great sages.
वृक्षांश्छित्त्वा पशून्हत्वा कृत्वा रुधिरकर्दमम 4.2.58.
Cutting down trees, killing animals, and making the earth muddy with blood—
मुधा जातिविकल्पोयं लोकेषु परिकल्प्यते 4.2.58.
This distinction of caste is imagined in the worlds without reason.
वंध्यानां चापि वंध्यात्वं सा परिव्राजिकाहरत् 4.2.58.
She, the wandering ascetic woman, removed even the barrenness of the barren.
विलोक्य तं समायातं दूरादुत्कंठितो नृपः 4.2.58.
Seeing him approach from afar, the king, filled with longing, gazed intently.
अधुना गुरुरेधित्वं मम भाग्योदयागतः 4.2.58.
Now, by the rise of my good fortune, the state of being a guru has come to me.
विरिंचिं सारथिं कृत्वा कृत्वा विष्णुं च पत्त्रिणम् 4.2.58.
Having made Brahmā the charioteer and Viṣṇu the bearer of the eagle, he set forth.
पातालं गमितः पूर्वं हरिणा विक्रमैस्त्रिभिः
Formerly, by three mighty strides, Hari cast him down to the netherworld.
इदानीं दिश मे तात कर्मनिर्मूलनक्षमम् 4.2.58.
Now, father, show me that which is capable of eradicating karma.
संख्यास्ति यावती देहे देहिनो रोमसंभवा 4.2.58.
As many as the hairs that arise on the body of an embodied being, so many are the counts.
