देवालयस्य कलशो यत्त्वया वीक्षितः पतन्

पुरी परिवृता स्वप्ने मृगयूथैः समंततः
The city, surrounded in a dream on all sides by packs of wild animals.
आतायियूकगृध्राद्यैः पुरीमुपरिचारिभिः
By robbers, owls, vultures, and others moving about above the city.
स्वप्नोत्पातानिति बहूञ्शंसञ्शंसन्नितस्ततः 4.2.56.
Thus, recounting many dream-omens from here and there.
केषांचित्पुरतो वादीद्ग्रहचारं प्रदर्शयन्
In the presence of some, he began to expound the movement of the planets.
सोयं धूमग्रहो व्योम्नि भित्त्वा सप्तर्षिमंडलम्

अतिचारगतो मंदः पुनर्वक्राध्व संस्थितः

व्यतीते वासरे योयं भूकंपः समपद्यत

उदीच्यादक्षिणाशायां येयमुल्का प्रधाविता
From the northern to the southern direction, this meteor sped forth.
उन्मूलितो महामूलो महानिलरयेण यः
A great root was uprooted by the force of a mighty wind.
सूर्योदयमनुप्राप्य प्राच्यां शुष्कतरूपरि
After sunrise, in the east, upon a dried tree,
मध्ये विपणि यतूर्णं कौचिच्चारण्यचारिणौ
In the middle of the marketplace, swiftly, two wanderers of the forest appeared.
रसालशालमुकुलं वीक्ष्यते यच्छरद्यदः
A mango, a śāla, and a bud are observed, as is the autumn river.
साध्वसंजनयित्वेति केचिदुच्चाटिताः पुरः 4.2.56.
Having caused fear, thus, some were expelled from the city.
अथ मध्येवरोधं स प्रविश्य निजमायया
Then, entering the inner chambers by his own power,
तव पुत्रशतं जज्ञे सप्तोनं शुभलक्षणे
A hundred sons were born to you, all possessing auspicious marks.
अंतर्वत्नी त्वियं कन्या जनयिष्यति शोभनाम्
This maiden, your wife, will give birth to a beautiful daughter.
असौ हि राज्ञो राज्ञीनामत्यंतमिहवल्लभा
She will be exceedingly beloved to the king and queen here.
पंचसप्तदिनान्येव जातानीतीह तर्क्यते
It is inferred that they were born within five or seven days.
इति दृष्टार्थकथनै राज्ञीमान्योभवद्द्विजः
Thus, by speaking of observed events, the Brahmin became honored by the queen.
अहो यादृगसौ विप्रः सर्वत्रातिविचक्षणः
Ah, how remarkable is this Brahmin, so exceedingly wise in all matters!
अलोलुप उदारश्च सदाचारो जितेंद्रियः
He is not greedy, generous, of good conduct, and master of his senses.
जितक्रोधः प्रसन्नास्यस्त्वनसूयुरवंचकः
He has conquered anger, his face is serene, he is free from envy, and does not deceive.
पुण्योपदेष्टा पुण्यात्मा सर्वव्रतपरायणः ।। 4.2.56.
He is a teacher of virtue, virtuous in soul, and wholly devoted to all sacred observances.
धीरः पुण्येतिहासज्ञः सर्वदृक्सर्वसंमतः
He is steadfast, knowledgeable in sacred histories, all-seeing, and esteemed by all.
क्षमी कुलीनोऽकृपणो भोक्ता निर्मलमानसः
He is patient, of noble lineage, not pitiable, a worthy enjoyer, and his mind is pure.
इत्थं तास्तद्गुणग्रामं वर्णयंत्यः पदेपदे
Thus, at every step, they described that multitude of his virtues.
एकदावसरं प्राप्य दिवोदासस्य भूभुजः
Once, finding an opportunity, King Divodāsa—lord of the earth—
राजन्वृद्धो गुणैर्वृद्धो ब्राह्मणः सुविचक्षणः
A king advanced in years and virtues, a Brahmin of great discernment,
राज्ञी राज्ञा कृतानुज्ञा सखीं प्रेष्य विचक्षणाम्
The queen, with the king’s permission, sent a wise companion.
