कलशोद्भव ते प्रीत्या सर्वे सर्वाघनाशनाः
Born from the pot, all are, by your affection, destroyers of every sin.
खखोल्को नाम भगवानादित्य परिकीर्तितः
The revered Aditya is known by the name Khakholka.
यथा खखोल्क इत्याख्या तस्यादित्यस्य तच्छृणु
Hear now the reason why that Aditya is called Khakholka.
कश्यपस्य च ते पत्न्यौ मारीचेः प्राक्प्रजापतेः
The wives of Kashyapa and Marichi, who existed before Prajapati, are yours.
अखंडिता गतिस्तेस्ति यतो गगनमंडले
There is uninterrupted movement because of the celestial sphere.
योसावुच्चैःश्रवा वाजी श्रूयते सवितूरथे
That horse, Uccaiḥśravas, is heard to be yoked to Savita's chariot.
पणं च कुरु कल्याणि तुभ्यं यो रोचतेनघे
O auspicious one, make a wager for yourself, whichever pleases you, O sinless one.
त्वज्जये का च मे प्रीतिर्मज्जये किं नु ते सुखम्
What joy is there for me in your victory, and what happiness is there for you in mine?
ज्ञात्वा पणो न कर्तव्यो मिथः स्नेहमभीप्सता
Knowing this, one should not wager when mutual affection is desired.
कद्रूरुवाच खेलस्य व्यवहारोयं पणे यत्किंचिदुच्यते ।। 4.1.50.
Kadrū said: This is the rule of the game; whatever is spoken in the wager.
अथ तां विनतामाह कद्रूः कुटिलमानसा
Then Kadrū, whose mind was crooked, spoke to Vinatā.
तस्यास्तु सा भवेद्दासी पराजीयेत या यया
Let her become a slave to the one by whom she is defeated.
इत्यन्योन्यं पणीकृत्य सर्पिण्यपि पतत्त्रिणी
Thus, having wagered against each other, the serpents and the winged ones.
कदागंतव्यमिति च चक्राते ते गमावधिम्
They set a time for departure, saying, 'When shall we go?'
विनतायां गतायां तु कद्रूराहूय चांगजान्
When Vinatā had departed, Kadrū summoned her own offspring.
तुरंगमुच्चैःश्रवसं प्रोद्भूतं क्षीरनीरधेः
The horse Uccaiḥśravas emerged from the ocean of milk.
कार्यकारणरूपस्य सादृश्यमधिगच्छति
He attains resemblance to the form of cause and effect.
तस्य वालधिमध्यास्य कृष्णकुंतलतां गताः
His hair in the middle of his tail became like black curling locks.
इति श्रुत्वा वचो मातुः काद्रवेयाः परस्परम्
Hearing thus the words of their mother, the children of Kadru among themselves—
प्राप्ताः प्रहृष्टा मृष्टान्नं दास्यत्यद्य प्रसूरिति ।। 4.1.50.
They became delighted, thinking, 'Today our mother will give us delicious food.'
मृष्टं तिष्ठतु तद्दूरं विषादप्यधिकं कटु
Let that delicious food remain far away; it is more bitter than poison.
वयं न यामो यद्भाव्यं तदस्माकं भवत्विह
We will not go; whatever is destined for us, let that befall us here.
अकर्णाः कूरहृदयाः पितरौ व्रीडयंति ते
Deaf and hard-hearted, you shame your parents.
पित्रोर्गिरं निराकृत्य ये तिष्ठेयुः सुदुर्मदाः
Those who, rejecting the words of their parents, persist are truly arrogant.
तेषां वचनमाकर्ण्य नयाम इति सोरगी
Hearing their words, she said with anger, 'Let us go.'
तार्क्ष्यस्य भक्ष्या भवत यूयं मद्वाक्यलंघनात्
Because you have transgressed my command, you shall become the food of Tarkshya.
इति शापानलाद्भीतैः कैश्चित्पातालमाश्रितम्
Frightened by the fire of her curse, some took refuge in the netherworld.
ते पुच्छमौच्चैःश्रवसमधिगम्य महाधियः
They, of great intelligence, reached the tail of Uccaiḥśravas.
तत्क्ष्वेडानल धूमौघैः फूत्कारभरनिःसृतैः
With the blasts of their hissing, fire, and clouds of smoke, issuing from their forceful breaths—
विनतापृष्ठमारुह्य कद्रूः स्नेहवशात्ततः 4.1.50.
Then, out of affection, Kadrū mounted upon Vinatā's back.
