Those sons of Pritha, each in their own way, roamed the earth in power.
At times, those great heroes endured hardships caused by their rivals.
And Panchali, their wife, was tormented by the suffering of her husbands.
Then, the daughter of Drupada worshipped Savita.
The radiant Bhaskara, pleased in heart, spoke to the daughter of Drupada.
She worshipped him with devotion everywhere, her mind pure.
O highly fortunate one, as many people as come seeking food—
When you have eaten, though this vessel is emptied, it will become full again.
In this way, O sage, she obtained a boon from the sun in Kashi.
Whoever worships me, his hunger will be destroyed.
Another boon was given to me by the Lord of All, for my fidelity to my husbands.
Whoever, at dawn, worships you and then sees me, O human,
Therefore, O beloved of Dharma, having always obtained a boon from the Lord of All—
Those humans who worship me here with faith,
Will see you, Yudhishthira’s faithful wife, standing near me.
Whether men or women, those who worship with devotion—
There is no fear arising from disease anywhere, nor any affliction caused by hunger or thirst.
This is the story of the Sun, worshipped by Draupadī.
Skanda said: I have briefly recounted the greatness of the Sun as related to Draupadī.
Long ago, at the holy place of the Five Rivers, renowned in the three worlds,
Having established the great liṅga called Gabhastīśvara,
For a divine thousand years, multiplied by a hundred, O sage,
In his own form, the Sun blazed, capable of burning the three worlds.
There, with the rays of Savitṛ, able to burn the three worlds,
The celestial beings, at Viṣṇu's abode, abandoned the cycle of coming and going.
Only the rays are seen there—across, above, and below.
Of that mass of radiance, of that heap of austerity, of those flames of penance,
The Sun is declared in the Vedas as the very Self of this world.
This Sun is the eye of the world; this Bhāskara is the soul of the universe.
Rising day by day, he lifts those fallen into the dark pit of blindness.
