ततः कृष्णं समापृच्छ्य कर्मनिर्मुक्तचेष्टितः
Then, having taken leave of Krishna, he ceased all actions bound by karma.
सांबो वाराणसीं प्राप्य समाराध्यांशुमालिनम्
Samba, reaching Varanasi, worshipped the Sun adorned with rays.
सांबादित्यस्तदारभ्य सर्वव्याधिहरो रविः
From that time, the Sun as Samba-Aditya became the remover of all diseases.
सांबकुंडे नरः स्नात्वा रविवारेऽरुणोदये
A man who bathes in the Samba-kunda at sunrise on a Sunday—
न स्त्री वैधव्यमाप्नोति सांबादित्यस्य सेवनात्
—a woman does not become widowed by serving Samba-Aditya.
शुक्लायां द्विज सप्तम्यां माघे मासि रवेर्दिने 4.1.48.
On the bright seventh day, O twice-born, in the month of Magha, on the Sun's day—
महारोगात्प्रमुच्येत तत्र स्नात्वारुणोदये
—one is freed from severe disease by bathing there at sunrise.
सन्निहत्यां कुरुक्षेत्रे यत्पुण्यं राहुदर्शने
The merit gained there at sunrise equals that of beholding Rahu at Kurukshetra during its conjunction.
मधौमासि रवेर्वारे यात्रा सांवत्सरी भवेत्
In the month of Madhu, on the Sun's day, the pilgrimage is considered annual.
सांबादित्यं नरो जातु न शोकैरभिभूयते
A man who worships Samba-Aditya is never overcome by sorrows.
विश्वेशात्पश्चिमाशायां सांबेनात्र महात्मना
To the west of Vishveshvara, here, by the great soul Samba—
इयं भविष्या तन्मूर्तिरगस्ते त्वत्पुरोऽकथि नरो भवति निष्पापः काशीवास फलं लभेत्
This will be the future form; O Agastya, I have told you before— a man becomes sinless and attains the fruit of dwelling in Kashi.
सांबादित्यस्य माहात्म्यं कथितं ते महामते
The greatness of Samba-Aditya has been told to you, O wise one.
इदानीं द्रौपदादित्यं कथयिष्यामि तेनघ
Now I shall tell you about Draupadi-Aditya, O sinless one.
सूत उवाच पाराशर्यमुने व्यास कुमारः कुंभजन्मने
Suta said: O sage Vyasa, son of Parashara, and O son born from the pot—
संदेहो नात्र कर्तव्यो यतस्तद्गोचरोखिलम्
No doubt should be entertained here, for all this is within his domain.
पृथिव्यां पंचधा भूत्वा प्रादुरासीज्जगद्धितः
He manifested on earth in five forms for the welfare of the world.
उमापि च जगद्धात्री द्रुपदस्य महीभुजः
And Uma, the sustainer of the world, was born as the daughter of Drupada, the king.
पंचापि पांडुतनयाः साक्षाद्रुद्रवपुर्धराः
The five sons of Pandu were direct embodiments of Rudra.
नारायणोपि कृष्णत्वं प्राप्य तत्साहचर्यकृत्
And Narayana himself, having assumed the form of Krishna, accompanied them.
प्रतपंतः पृथिव्यां ते पार्थाश्चेरुः पृथक्पृथक्
Those sons of Pritha, each in their own way, roamed the earth in power.
कदाचित्ते महावीरा भ्रातृव्यप्रतिपादिताम्
At times, those great heroes endured hardships caused by their rivals.
पांचाल्यपि च तत्पत्नी पतिव्यसनतापिता
And Panchali, their wife, was tormented by the suffering of her husbands.
आराधितोथ सविता तया द्रुपदकन्यया 4.1.49.
Then, the daughter of Drupada worshipped Savita.
उवाच च प्रसन्नात्मा भास्करो द्रुपदात्मजाम्
The radiant Bhaskara, pleased in heart, spoke to the daughter of Drupada.
आराधयंतीं भावेन सर्वत्र शुचिमानसाम्
She worshipped him with devotion everywhere, her mind pure.
स्थाल्यैतया महाभागे यावंतोऽन्नार्थिनो जनाः
O highly fortunate one, as many people as come seeking food—
भुक्तायां त्वयि रिक्तैषा पूर्णभक्ता भविप्यति
When you have eaten, though this vessel is emptied, it will become full again.
इत्थं वरस्तया लब्धः काश्यामादित्यतो मुने
In this way, O sage, she obtained a boon from the sun in Kashi.
आराधयिष्यति नरः क्षुद्बाधा तस्य नश्यति
Whoever worships me, his hunger will be destroyed.
