सांबोपि यामि नोयामि क्षणमित्थमचिंतयत्
Sāmba thought, 'Shall I go or not go?,' thus pondering for a moment.
न यामि च कथं वाक्यादस्याहं ब्रह्मचारिणः
'If I do not go, how will I answer the words of this celibate sage?'
प्रणमत्सुकुमारेषु व्रीडितोयं मयैकदा
Once, out of modesty, he bowed to the delicate ones.
अत्याहितं तदस्तीह तदागोद्वयदर्शनात्
That excessive act occurred here, at the sight of the two cows.
ब्रह्मकोपाग्निनिर्दग्धाः प्ररोहंति न जातुचित्
Burned by the fire of Brahma's wrath, they never sprout again.
इति ध्यात्वा क्षणं सांबोऽविशदंतःपुरंपितुः
Thinking thus for a moment, Sāmba entered his father's inner chambers.
दूरात्प्रणम्य विज्ञप्तिं स चकार सशंकितः 4.1.48.
From a distance, he bowed and made his request, filled with apprehension.
ससंभ्रमोथ कृष्णोपि दृष्ट्वा सांबं च नारदम्
Then, with agitation, Krishna too, seeing Sāmba and Nārada,
उत्थिते देवकीसूनौ ताः सर्वा अपि गोपिकाः
As Devakī's son rose, all the gopīs also stood up.
महार्हशयनीये तं हस्ते धृत्वा महामुनिम्
On a splendid couch, they took the great sage by the hand.
तासां स्खलितमालोक्य तिष्ठंतीनां पुरो मुनिः
Seeing their stumbling as they stood, the sage stood before them.
पश्यपश्य महाबुद्धे दृष्ट्वा जांबवतीसुतम्
Look, look, O great-minded one, having seen Jāmbavatī's son.
कृष्णोपि सांबमाहूय सहसैवाशपत्सुतम्
Krishna too, suddenly called Sāmba and cursed his son.
यस्मात्त्वद्रूपमालोक्य गोपाल्यः स्खलिता इमाः
Because, seeing your form, these gopīs have stumbled.
वेपमानो महाव्याधिभयात्सांबोपि दारुणात्
Sāmba, trembling from the dreadful fear of great disease,
कृष्णोप्यनेन संजानन्सांबं स्वसुतमौरसम्
Krishna, recognizing Sāmba as his own true son,
तत्र ब्रध्नं समाराध्य प्रकृतिं स्वामवाप्स्यसि 4.1.48.
There, by worshipping Bradhna, you will obtain your own nature.
यत्र विश्वेश्वरः साक्षाद्यत्र स्वर्गापगा च सा तेषां विशुद्धिरस्त्येव प्राप्य वाराणसीं पुरीम्
Where the Lord of the Universe is manifest, and the heavenly river flows, their purification surely occurs upon reaching the city of Vārāṇasī.
न केवलं हि पापेभ्यो वाराणस्यां विमुच्यते
Not only from sins does one become free in Vārāṇasī.
तत्रानंदवने शंभोस्तवशाप निराकृतिः
There, in Ānandavana, the curse of Śambhu is removed.
ततः कृष्णं समापृच्छ्य कर्मनिर्मुक्तचेष्टितः
Then, having taken leave of Krishna, he ceased all actions bound by karma.
सांबो वाराणसीं प्राप्य समाराध्यांशुमालिनम्
Samba, reaching Varanasi, worshipped the Sun adorned with rays.
सांबादित्यस्तदारभ्य सर्वव्याधिहरो रविः
From that time, the Sun as Samba-Aditya became the remover of all diseases.
सांबकुंडे नरः स्नात्वा रविवारेऽरुणोदये
A man who bathes in the Samba-kunda at sunrise on a Sunday—
न स्त्री वैधव्यमाप्नोति सांबादित्यस्य सेवनात्
—a woman does not become widowed by serving Samba-Aditya.
शुक्लायां द्विज सप्तम्यां माघे मासि रवेर्दिने 4.1.48.
On the bright seventh day, O twice-born, in the month of Magha, on the Sun's day—
महारोगात्प्रमुच्येत तत्र स्नात्वारुणोदये
—one is freed from severe disease by bathing there at sunrise.
सन्निहत्यां कुरुक्षेत्रे यत्पुण्यं राहुदर्शने
The merit gained there at sunrise equals that of beholding Rahu at Kurukshetra during its conjunction.
मधौमासि रवेर्वारे यात्रा सांवत्सरी भवेत्
In the month of Madhu, on the Sun's day, the pilgrimage is considered annual.
सांबादित्यं नरो जातु न शोकैरभिभूयते
A man who worships Samba-Aditya is never overcome by sorrows.
