अप्यहासीदितोलोकाज्जगाम च सुरालयम्
He vanished from sight and went to the abode of the gods.
तेषामेवविचाराच्च हानिरेषा सुपर्वणाम्
Because of their lack of discernment, this loss befell the Suparṇas.
पितामहेन महतो गौरवात्प्रतिपादितम्
This was declared by the revered Grandsire, out of great respect.
पौराः समागता द्वारि सह जानपदैर्नरैः
The citizens gathered at the gate, together with men from the countryside.
दत्त्वोपदं यथार्हं ते प्रणेमुः क्षोणिवज्रिणम्
Having offered due gifts, they bowed to the king, wielder of the thunderbolt.
केचिच्च समुदा दृष्ट्या केचिच्च करसंज्ञया
Some greeted with a glance, and some with a gesture of the hand.
तेजिरे भेजिरे सर्वे रत्नार्चिः परिसेविते राज्ञः शतशलाकस्थच्छत्रस्यच्छाययाशुभे
All shone and assembled, adorned with the radiance of jewels, beneath the auspicious shade of the king’s hundred-ribbed parasol.
विशांपतिरथोवाच तन्मुखच्छाययेरितम् 4.1.43.
Then the lord of the people spoke, his face shaded by that parasol.
अस्मत्कुले मूलभूतो भास्करो मान्य एव नः 4.1.43.
In our lineage, the Sun is the very root and always honored by us.
अथ मंदरकंदरोदरोल्लसद समद्युति रत्नमंदिरे
Then, in a palace of jewels, shining like the slopes and caves of Mandara,
निवसञ्जगदीश्वरो हरः कृशरजनीश कलामनोहरः
dwelt Hara, Lord of the universe, enchanting with the crescent moon on his emaciated night-dark form.
विरहानलशांतये तदा समलेपि त्रिपुरारिणापि यः ।। मलयोद्भव पंक एष स प्रतिपेदेह्यधुना पिपांसुताम् । ३ परितापहराणि पद्मिनीनां मृदुलान्यपि कंकणीकृतानि
To soothe the fire of separation, Tripurāri himself then applied this sandal paste, born of the Malaya mountains, which now has become thirsted for; even the softest bracelets of lotuses, which relieve pain, were worn.
यदु दुग्धनिधिं निमथ्यदेवैर्मृदुसारः समकर्षि पूर्णचंद्रः
When the gods churned the ocean of milk, the gentle and pure full moon was drawn forth.
यददीधरदेष जाततापः पृथुले मौलिजटानि कुंजकोणे
When the blazing heat arose from the mountain's slopes, it was held in the thick locks at the base of his matted hair.
महतो विरहस्य शंकरः प्रसभंतस्यवशी वशंगतः
Śaṃkara, though master of himself, was forcibly overcome by the pain of great separation.
अतिचित्रमिदं यदात्मना शुचिरप्येष कृपीटयोनिना
It is indeed remarkable that, though pure in his own nature, he was afflicted by the daughter of the mountain.
निजभालतलं कलानिधेः कलया नित्यमलंकरोति यः
He who always adorns his own forehead with a portion of the moon, the storehouse of rays.
गरलं गलनालिकातले विलसेदस्य न तेन तापितः 4.1.44.
He was not tormented by the poison that shone at the base of his throat.
विलसद्धरिचंदनोदकच्छटया तद्विरहापनुत्तये
With the radiance of water mixed with fragrant sandal, he dispels the pain of separation.
सकलभ्रममेष नाशयेत्स्रगहित्वाद्यपदेशजं हरः
Hara destroys all delusion arising from the instruction of garlands and similar things.
स्मृतिमात्रपथंगतोपि यस्त्रिविध तापमपाकरोत्यलम्
Even by passing through the path of remembrance, he completely removes the threefold suffering.
अपि काशि समागतोऽनिलो यदि गात्राणि परिष्वजेन्मम
O Kāśī, even if the wind that has come to you were to embrace my limbs,
अगमिष्यदहोकथं सतापो ननु दक्षांगजयाय एधितः
How could the burning pain not come, since it was kindled for the sake of Dakṣa's daughter?
न तथोज्झितदेहयातया मम दक्षोद्भवयामनोऽदुनोत्
Not even the torment of abandoning the body afflicted me as much as the pain born from Dakṣa's daughter.
अयि काशि मुदा कदा पुनस्तव लप्स्ये सुखमंगसंगजम्
O Kāśī, when will I again joyfully obtain the happiness that comes from union with your body?
अयि काशि विनाशिताघसंघे तवविश्लेषजआशुशुक्षणिः
O Kāśī, with the destruction of the multitude of sins, I am scorched by the fire of separation from you.
अगमन्मम दक्षजा वियोगजो दवथुः प्राग्घिमवत्सुतौषधेन
The fever born from separation from Dakṣa's daughter came upon me, for which there was no remedy like the Himalayan herbs for the prince.
मनसेति गृणंस्तदा शिवः सुतरां संवृततापवैकृतः 4.1.44.
Then Śiva, whose mind was thus afflicted, became entirely enveloped in the distortion of grief.
प्रियया वपुषोर्धयानयाप्यपरिज्ञात वियोगकारणः
Even with the presence of his beloved's body, the cause of separation was not recognized.
तव भूतिरहो विभूतिदात्री सकलापत्कलिकापि भूतधात्री
Ah, your glory, O giver of prosperity, is the very support of all beings, even as it is the destroyer of all calamities.
