सदप्सरा यथास्वर्भूस्तत्पुर्यपिसदप्सराः
Just as there are celestial nymphs in heaven, so too in that city there were celestial nymphs.
अनीतयश्च तद्ग्रामानाराजपुरुषाः क्वचित्
And in those villages, sometimes there were no royal officials.
दिवोदासस्य तस्यैवं काश्यां राज्यं प्रशासतः
Thus, while Divodāsa was ruling the kingdom in Kāśī,
गीर्वाणा विप्रतीकारमथ तस्य चिकीर्षवः
the gods then wished to bring about his downfall.
भवादृशामिव मुने प्रायशो धर्मचारिणाम्
O sage, as is often the case with the righteous like yourself,
यद्यप्यसौ धराधीशो व्याधिनोद्दुर्धराध्वरैः
even though he was lord of the earth, he was afflicted by severe obstacles and difficult sacrifices.
स्वभाव एव द्युसदां परोत्कर्षासहिष्णुता
It is simply the nature of the gods to be unable to tolerate the great excellence of others.
अंतराया भवंत्येव धर्मस्यापि पदेपदे
Obstacles indeed arise at every step, even on the path of righteousness.
अधर्मिणः समेधंते धनधान्यसमृद्धिभिः 4.1.43.
The unrighteous gather together, prospering in wealth and grain.
प्रजाः पालयतस्तस्य पुत्रानिव निजौरसान्
He protected his subjects as if they were his own sons born from his body.
षाड्गुण्यवेदिनस्तस्य त्रिशक्त्यूर्जितचेतसः
He understood the sixfold policy, and his mind was empowered by the three strengths.
बुद्धिमंतोपि विबुधा विप्रतीकर्तुमुद्यताः
Even the wise gods, though intelligent, were intent on opposing him.
एकपत्नीव्रताः सर्वे पुमांसस्तस्य मंडले
All the men in his realm observed the vow of one wife.
अनधीतो न विप्रोभूदशूरोनैव बाहुजः
No brāhmaṇa was unlearned, nor was any kṣatriya lacking in valor.
अनन्यवृत्तयः शूद्रा द्विजशुश्रूषणं प्रति
The śūdras had no other occupation except service to the twice-born.
अविप्लुत ब्रह्मचर्यास्तद्राष्ट्रे ब्रह्मचारिणः
The students there maintained unbroken celibacy.
आतिथ्यधर्मप्रवणा धर्मशास्त्रविचक्षणाः
They were devoted to the duties of hospitality and skilled in the scriptures of righteousness.
तृतीयाश्रमिणो यस्मिन्वनवृत्तिकृतादराः
In that land, those in the third stage of life held the forest-dweller’s way in high regard.
सर्वसंगविनिर्मुक्ता निर्मुक्ता निष्परिग्रहाः 4.1.43.
Freed from all attachments, liberated, and without possessiveness.
अन्येनुलोमजन्मानः प्रतिलो मभवा अपि
Those born in accordance with custom, and even those born contrary to it.
अनपत्या न तद्राष्ट्रे धनहीनोपि कोपि न
There are none without children, nor is anyone in that realm destitute.
न चाटा नैव वाचाटा वंचका नो न हिंसकाः
There are no flatterers, nor those who speak falsely, no deceivers, and no violent ones.
श्रुतिघोषो हि सर्वत्र शास्त्रवादः पदेपदे
Everywhere is the sound of scripture, and discourse on the teachings at every step.
वीणावेणुप्रवादाश्च मृदंगा मधुरस्वनाः
There are melodies of the lute and flute, and the sweet sounds of drums.
मांसाशिनः पुरोडाशे नैवान्यत्र कदाचन
Those who eat meat do so only in sacrificial offerings, never elsewhere at any time.
पुत्रस्य पित्रोः पदयोः पूजनं देवपूजनम्
A son's worship at the feet of his parents is regarded as worship of the gods.
नारीणां भर्तृपद् योरर्चनं तद्वचःश्रुतिः
For women, reverence at the feet of their husbands is taught and heard.
सपर्ययंति मुदिता भृत्याः स्वामिपदांबुजम्
Servants joyfully worship the lotus feet of their masters.
वरिवस्यंति भूयोपि त्रिकालं काशिदेवताः 4.1.43.
Even repeatedly, the local deities are worshipped three times a day.
विद्वद्भिश्च तपोनिष्ठास्तपोनिष्ठैर्जितेंद्रियाः
By the learned, those devoted to austerity, and those who have conquered their senses through austerity.
