जलस्य धारणं मूर्ध्नि विश्वेश स्नानजन्मनः 4.1.41.
O Lord of the universe, holding water on the head is the origin of bathing.
तानि चिह्नानि कतिचिद्ब्रूहि मे परिपृच्छतः
Tell me, as I inquire, some of those signs.
मृत्यौ निकटमापन्ने मुने तानि निशामय
O sage, observe those signs when death draws near.
याम्यनासापुटे यस्य वायुर्वाति दिवानिशम्
For whom the breath moves day and night in the passage of Yama’s nostrils,
अहोरात्रं त्र्यहोरात्रं रविर्वहति संततम्
For a day and night, or three days and nights, the sun continually carries it.
वहेन्नासापुटयुगे दशाहानि निरंतरम्
If it carries through both nostrils for ten days without interruption,
नासावर्त्म द्वयं हित्वा मातरिश्वा मुखाद्वहेत्
Having left the two nasal passages, if the wind carries out from the mouth,
अकस्मादेवयत्काले मृत्युः सन्निहितो भवेत्
Whenever, suddenly, at that time, death becomes imminent,
सूर्ये सप्तमराशिस्थे जन्मर्क्षस्थे निशाकरे
When the Sun is in the seventh sign, or the birth star is with the Moon,
अकस्माद्वीक्षते यस्तु पुरुषं कृष्णपिंगलम्
Whoever suddenly sees a man dark and tawny in color,
यस्य बीजं मलं मूत्रं क्षुतं मूत्रं मलं तु वा 4.1.42.
Whose semen, excrement, urine, or sneeze, or urine or excrement,
व्यभ्रेह्नि वारिपूर्णास्यः पृष्ठीकृत्य दिवाकरम्
With mouth full of water, looking back at the sun, under a cloudless sky,
अरुंधतीं ध्रुवं चैव विष्णोस्त्रीणिपदानि च
Arundhati, Dhruva, and the three steps of Vishnu,
अरुंधती भवेज्जिह्वा ध्रुवो नासाग्रमुच्यते
Arundhati is said to be the tongue, Dhruva is the tip of the nose.
वेत्ति नीलादिवर्णस्य कटम्लादिरसस्यहि
He perceives the color blue and the taste of bitterness and sourness.
षण्मासमृत्योर्मर्त्यस्य कंठोष्ठरसना रदाः
For six months before death, the throat, lips, tongue, and teeth of a mortal—
रेतः करजनेत्रांता नीलिमानं भजंति चेत्
If semen, fingers, or eyes take on a bluish hue,
द्रुतमारुह्यशरठस्त्रिवर्णो यस्य मस्तके
Quickly ascending, the three-colored streak appears on his head.
सुस्नातस्यापि यस्याशु हृदयं परिशुष्यति 4.1.42.
Even after bathing well, if a person's heart quickly dries up,
प्रतिबिंबं भवेद्यस्य पदखंडपदाकृति
If someone's reflection appears broken or in fragments,
छाया प्रकंपते यस्य देहबंधेपि निश्चले
If the shadow of someone trembles, even when the body is steady and bound,
निजस्य प्रतिबिंबस्य नीराज्यमुकुरादिषु
If one's own reflection is not seen in water, clarified butter, or mirrors,
मतिर्भ्रश्येत्स्खलेद्वाणी धनुरैद्रं निरक्षितै
If the mind becomes confused, speech falters, or the bowstring slips from the hand,
दिवा च तारकाचक्रं रात्रौ व्योमवितारकम्
If one sees the circle of stars during the day, or the sky filled with stars at night,
भूरुहे भूधराग्रे च गंधर्वनगरालयम्
If one sees the city of the Gandharvas on a tree or at the summit of a mountain,
सर्वेष्वेतेषु चिह्नेषु यद्येकमपि वीक्षते
If, among all these signs, a person perceives even one,
करावरुद्ध श्रवणः शृणोति न यदा ध्वनिम्
If, with ears covered by the hands, one does not hear any sound,
यः पश्येदात्मनश्छायां दक्षिणाशा समाश्रिताम्
Whoever sees his own shadow resting in the southern direction,
प्रोह्यते भक्ष्यते वापि पिशाचासुरवायसैः 4.1.42.
Is driven away or devoured by demons, spirits, or crows,
रासभैः करभैः कीशैः श्वेनैरश्वतरैर्बकैः
By donkeys, camels, monkeys, dogs, mules, or cranes,
