युक्तं युक्तं त्यजेद्वायुं युक्तंयुक्तं च पूरयेत् 4.1.41.
One should exhale and inhale the breath properly, again and again.
नित्यं सोमकलापूर्णं शरीरं यस्य योगिनः 4.1.41.
The body of the yogi is always filled with the nectar of the moon.
वायुतत्त्वं भ्रुवोर्मध्ये वृत्तमंजनसन्निभम्
The principle of air, between the brows, appears as a circle resembling collyrium.
सगुणं वणर्भेदेन निर्गुणं केवलं मतम् 4.1.41.
With qualities, it is considered manifold; without qualities, it is regarded as pure.
युक्ताहारविहारश्च युक्तचेष्टो हि कर्मसु 4.1.41.
He who is moderate in food and recreation, and measured in his actions—
चंद्रांगे तु समभ्यस्य सूर्यांगे पुनरभ्यसेत् 4.1.41.
Having practiced on the lunar channel, one should then practice on the solar channel.
जालंधरे कृते बंधे कंठसकोचलक्षणे 4.1.41.
When the throat lock is performed, marked by the contraction of the throat—
योजनानां शतं यातुं शक्तिःस्यान्निमिषार्धतः 4.1.41.
The power to travel a hundred yojanas in half a blink arises.
यत्प्राप्य न निवर्तेत यत्प्राप्य न च शोचति
Having attained that, one does not return; having attained that, one does not grieve.
काश्यां सुखेन कैवल्यं यथालभ्येत जंतुभिः 4.1.41.
In Kāśī, creatures easily attain liberation, as it is obtained.
जलस्य धारणं मूर्ध्नि विश्वेश स्नानजन्मनः 4.1.41.
O Lord of the universe, holding water on the head is the origin of bathing.
तानि चिह्नानि कतिचिद्ब्रूहि मे परिपृच्छतः
Tell me, as I inquire, some of those signs.
मृत्यौ निकटमापन्ने मुने तानि निशामय
O sage, observe those signs when death draws near.
याम्यनासापुटे यस्य वायुर्वाति दिवानिशम्
For whom the breath moves day and night in the passage of Yama’s nostrils,
अहोरात्रं त्र्यहोरात्रं रविर्वहति संततम्
For a day and night, or three days and nights, the sun continually carries it.
वहेन्नासापुटयुगे दशाहानि निरंतरम्
If it carries through both nostrils for ten days without interruption,
नासावर्त्म द्वयं हित्वा मातरिश्वा मुखाद्वहेत्
Having left the two nasal passages, if the wind carries out from the mouth,
अकस्मादेवयत्काले मृत्युः सन्निहितो भवेत्
Whenever, suddenly, at that time, death becomes imminent,
सूर्ये सप्तमराशिस्थे जन्मर्क्षस्थे निशाकरे
When the Sun is in the seventh sign, or the birth star is with the Moon,
अकस्माद्वीक्षते यस्तु पुरुषं कृष्णपिंगलम्
Whoever suddenly sees a man dark and tawny in color,
यस्य बीजं मलं मूत्रं क्षुतं मूत्रं मलं तु वा 4.1.42.
Whose semen, excrement, urine, or sneeze, or urine or excrement,
व्यभ्रेह्नि वारिपूर्णास्यः पृष्ठीकृत्य दिवाकरम्
With mouth full of water, looking back at the sun, under a cloudless sky,
अरुंधतीं ध्रुवं चैव विष्णोस्त्रीणिपदानि च
Arundhati, Dhruva, and the three steps of Vishnu,
अरुंधती भवेज्जिह्वा ध्रुवो नासाग्रमुच्यते
Arundhati is said to be the tongue, Dhruva is the tip of the nose.
वेत्ति नीलादिवर्णस्य कटम्लादिरसस्यहि
He perceives the color blue and the taste of bitterness and sourness.
षण्मासमृत्योर्मर्त्यस्य कंठोष्ठरसना रदाः
For six months before death, the throat, lips, tongue, and teeth of a mortal—
रेतः करजनेत्रांता नीलिमानं भजंति चेत्
If semen, fingers, or eyes take on a bluish hue,
द्रुतमारुह्यशरठस्त्रिवर्णो यस्य मस्तके
Quickly ascending, the three-colored streak appears on his head.
सुस्नातस्यापि यस्याशु हृदयं परिशुष्यति 4.1.42.
Even after bathing well, if a person's heart quickly dries up,
प्रतिबिंबं भवेद्यस्य पदखंडपदाकृति
If someone's reflection appears broken or in fragments,
