शय्यातृणजलाभ्यंग दीपा गार्हस्थ्य सिद्धिदाः
A bed, grass, water, anointing, and a lamp—these grant success in household life.
पैशुन्यं परदाराश्च द्रोहः क्रोधानृताप्रियम्
Slander, another’s wife, betrayal, anger, falsehood, and harsh speech—
नवावश्यककर्माणि कार्याणि प्रतिवासरम्
The nine essential daily duties must be performed each day.
वेश्वदेवं तथातिथ्यं नवमं पितृतर्पणम्
Worship of the house deities, hospitality to guests, and, as the ninth, offerings to the ancestors.
जन्मर्क्षं मैथुनं मंत्रो गृहच्छिद्रं च वंचनम्
Birthdays, sexual union, mantras, revealing household secrets, and deception—
नवैतानि प्रकाश्यानि रहः पापमकुत्सितम् कन्यादानं गुणोत्कर्षो नान्यत्केनापि कुत्रचित् ।। 4.1.40.
These nine are not to be disclosed; secret sin is never to be despised. Giving a maiden in marriage and excellence in virtues—nothing else is to be revealed anywhere.
पात्र मित्र विनीतेषु दीनानाथोपकारिषु
To the worthy, to friends, to the disciplined, and to those who help the poor and the helpless—
निष्फलं नवसूत्सृष्टं चाटचारणतस्करे
It is fruitless to give new things to flatterers, wanderers, and thieves.
आपस्त्वपि न देयानि नववस्तूनि सर्वथा
Even water should not be given in any way as new gifts.
न्यासाधीकुलवृत्तिं च निक्षेपं स्त्रीधनं सुतम्
Deposits, the livelihood of dependents, entrusted goods, a woman's wealth, and a son—
एतन्नवानां नवकं ज्ञात्वा प्रियमवाप्नुयात्
Knowing this ninth set of nine, one attains what is dear.
सत्यं शौचमहिंसा च क्षांतिर्दानं दया दमः
Truthfulness, purity, non-violence, forbearance, generosity, compassion, and self-restraint—
अभ्यस्य नवतिं चैतां स्वर्गमार्गप्रदीपिकाम्
Practicing these nine, which illuminate the path to heaven—
जिह्वा भार्या सुतो भ्राता मित्र दास समाश्रिताः
The tongue, wife, son, brother, friend, servant, and dependents—
पानं दुर्जन संसर्गः पत्या च विरहोटनम्
Drinking, association with wicked people, and separation from one's husband.
समर्घं धान्यमुद्धत्य महर्घं यः प्रयच्छति ।।4.1.40.
Whoever takes grain of little value and gives it away as though it were very precious.
अग्रे माहिषिकं दृष्ट्वा मध्ये च वृषलीपतिम्
Seeing a buffalo in front and a leader of outcastes in the middle.
महिषीत्युच्यते नारी या च स्याद्व्यभिचारिणी
A woman is called 'buffalo' who is adulterous.
स्व वृषं या परित्यज्य परवृषे वृषायते
She who abandons her own bull and seeks union with another's bull.
यावदुष्णं भवत्यन्नं यावन्मौनेन भुज्यते
As long as food remains hot, it should be eaten in silence.
विद्याविनयसंपन्ने श्रोत्रिये गृहमागते
When a learned and humble Brahmin enters the house.
भ्रष्टशौचवताचारे विप्रे वेदविवर्जिते
A Brahmin who has lost purity and proper conduct, and is devoid of Vedic knowledge.
यस्य कोष्ठगतं चान्नं वेदाभ्यासेन जीर्यति
Whose food stored in the granary decays due to study of the Vedas.
न स्त्रीणां वपनं कार्यं न च गाः समनुव्रजेत्
Women should not be shaved, nor should cows be followed.
सर्वान्केशान्समुद्धृत्य च्छेदयेदंगुलद्वयम्
Having removed all the hair, one should cut off two fingers.
राजा वा राजपुत्रो वा ब्राह्मणो वा बहुश्रुतः ।। 4.1.40.
Whether a king, a prince, or a Brahmin well-versed in scripture.
माक्षिकं फाणितं शाकं गोरसं लवणं घृतम् ।। 4.1.40.
Honey, sugar, vegetables, cow's milk, salt, and ghee.
मा देहीति च यो ब्रूयाद्गवाग्निब्राह्मणेषु च 4.1.40.
Whoever says 'Do not give' regarding cows, fire, or Brahmins.
चैत्यवृक्षं चितिं यूपं शिवनिर्माल्यभोजिनम् 4.1.40.
A sacred tree, a funeral mound, a sacrificial post, and one who eats Shiva's remnants.
फाणितं गोरसं तोयं लवणं मधुकांजिकम् 4.1.40.
Sugar, cow's milk, water, salt, and honey mixed with water.
