A maiden in her father's house who sees her menses, yet remains unwed and unsanctified,
He who marries her out of ignorance becomes the husband of a woman of degraded status.
Recognizing the fault in both—the maiden and the suitor—
Women are always pure; they are not defiled by anyone.
In ancient times, women were enjoyed by the gods—Soma, Gandharvas, and Fire.
Soma granted purity to women; Fire bestowed universal sanctity.
During menstruation, Fire consumes the maiden; the Moon at the sight of body hair.
Visible body hair, barrenness, destruction of lineage, and emerging youthfulness—
Therefore, one desiring the fruit of giving a maiden should not give one who is unsanctified by fire.
He who gives a maiden untouched by Soma and others attains the fruit of giving.
Beds, seats, vehicles, a corpse, a woman's mouth, and blades of grass—
The mouth of goats and horses is pure; cows are pure at the back.
Whether taken by force or seized by a thief,
Copper is purified by sourness; bronze by ashes.
Even in thought, she who does not contemplate another man,
Father, grandfather, brother, kinsman, and mother likewise,
If they do not give her, they incur the sin of killing a foetus, in both sacred and unsacred times.
One deprived of authority, impure, living only on alms,
If there is unfaithfulness in marriage, purity is restored by renunciation of the pregnancy.
A Śūdra's wife is indeed a Śūdra, and she is also considered his own, as is taught regarding the Vaiśya.
A Brāhmaṇa who places a Śūdra woman on his bed goes to a degraded state.
For one whose main focus is on offerings to gods, ancestors, and guests—
The wives who are not properly honored in the household utter curses.
Therefore, they should be respectfully worshipped with ornaments, clothing, and food.
Where women are joyful with ornaments, clothing, and food—
Where a wife is pleased by her husband, and the husband is pleased by his wife—
Unoffered, offered, well-offered, and consumed offerings—
Recitation is an unoffered oblation; offering into the fire is an offered oblation; giving to beings is a well-offered oblation; and food given is a material offering.
A Brāhmaṇa who performs these five sacrifices does not fall into misfortune.
He should ask a learned Brāhmaṇa, born in a good family and free from illness, for advice.
