किं बिभेति नरो धीरः कृतादघशिलोच्चयात्
Why should a steadfast person fear, even after committing a heap of sins?
क्वाविमुक्तं महालिंगं चतुर्वर्गफलोदयम्
Where is Avimukta, the great linga, which brings forth the fruits of the four aims of life?
अविमुक्ते महाक्षेत्रे विश्वेशसमधिष्ठिते
In Avimukta, the great sacred place, presided over by the Lord of all—
द्रष्टारमविमुक्तस्य दृष्ट्वा दंडधरो यमः
Seeing the seer of Avimukta, Yama, the wielder of the staff—
धन्यं तन्नेत्रनिर्माणं कृतकृत्यौ तु तौ करौ
Blessed are those eyes that behold it; and those hands are truly fulfilled.
त्रिसंध्यमविमुक्तेशं यो जपेन्नियतः शुचिः
Whoever, disciplined and pure, recites the name of the Lord of Avimukta at the three junctions of the day—
अविमुक्तं महालिंगं दृष्ट्वा ग्रामांतरं व्रजेत्
—having seen the great liṅga at Avimukta, should then proceed to another village.
अथो किमसि शुश्रूषुः कथयिष्यामि तत्पुनः
Now then, since you wish to listen, I will tell you that again.
अतीव सुश्रुते जाते तथापि न धिनोम्यहम्
Though you have become extremely attentive, still I do not blame you.
अविमुक्तेश्वरं लिंगं क्षेत्रं चाप्यविमुक्तकम्
The liṅga of the Lord of Avimukta, and also the field called Avimukta—
स्वश्रेयो दातुरेतस्या विमुक्तस्य महामते
—O wise one, for the sake of one’s own good, one should give to this Avimukta.
समीहितार्थ संसिद्धिर्लभ्यते पुण्यभारतः
O virtuous Bharata, the fulfillment of one’s desired aim is attained.
श्रुतिवर्त्मजुषः पुंसः संस्पर्शान्नश्यतो मुने
For a person who follows the path of the scriptures, O sage, destruction comes from contact with what is forbidden.
वर्जितस्य विधानेन प्रोक्तस्याकरणेन वै
By neglecting the prescribed rule, or by not performing what is enjoined—
निषिद्धाचरणं तस्मात्कथयिष्ये तवाग्रतः
—and by engaging in what is prohibited, therefore I will tell you in your presence.
पलांडुं विड्वराहं च शेलुं लशुन गृंजने
Onion, pig’s flesh, hedgehog, garlic, and the gṛñjana plant—
व्रश्चनान्वृक्षनिर्यासान्पायसापूपशष्कुलीः 4.1.40.
—radishes, exudations from trees, milk, cakes, and śaṣkulī—
पय ऐकशफं हेयं तथा क्रामेलकाविकम्
—milk, one-hoofed animals, likewise the crane and the wild duck—
टिट्टिभं कलविंकं च हंसं चक्रं प्लवंबकम्
—the lapwing, the kalaviṅka, the swan, the chakravāka, and the plavaṅbaka—
जालपादान्खंजरीटान्बुडित्वा मत्स्यभक्षकान्
—web-footed birds, the khañjarīṭa, the buḍitva, and fish-eating birds—
हव्यकव्यनियुक्तौ तु भक्ष्यौ पाठीनरोहितौ
—the pāṭhīna and rohiṭa fish, which are prescribed for offerings to gods and ancestors—
श्वाविद्गोधे प्रशस्ते च ज्ञाताश्च मृगपक्षिणः
—the wild boar, the iguana, and, among the excellent, the known beasts and birds.
यज्ञार्थं पशुहिंसा या सा स्वर्ग्या नेतरा क्वचित्
Animal sacrifice performed for the sake of ritual is meritorious and leads to heaven; otherwise, it is never so.
प्राणात्यये क्रतौ श्राद्धे भैषजे विप्रकाम्यया
In cases of mortal danger, in sacrificial rites, in ancestral offerings, for medicine, or when requested by a Brahmin—
न तादृशं भवेत्पापं मृगयावृत्तिकांक्षिणः
There is not such sin for those who desire a livelihood through hunting.
मखार्थं ब्रह्मणा सृष्टाः पशु द्रुम मृगौषधीः
For the purpose of sacrifice, Brahma created animals, trees, deer, and medicinal plants.
पितृदेवक्रतुकृते मधुपर्कार्थमेव च 4.1.40.
For the sake of offerings to ancestors and gods, and also for the purpose of the madhuparka ritual.
यो जंतूनात्मपुष्ट्यर्थं हिनस्ति ज्ञानदुर्बलः
One who kills living beings for his own nourishment, lacking understanding—
भोक्तानुमंता संस्कर्ता क्रयिविक्रयि हिंसकाः
The eater, the approver, the preparer, the buyer, the seller, and the killer—
प्रत्यब्दमश्वमेधेन शतं वर्षाणि यो यजेत्
He who performs the horse sacrifice every year for a hundred years—
