कथं नान्ये च राजानो मां कथं कथ्यते त्वया
How is it that other kings do not speak of me, and how do you speak of me?
पापनिष्ठे च वै राज्ञि न देवो वर्षते पुनः
When a king is devoted to evil, the gods do not send rain again.
महाप्रसाद इत्याज्ञां त्वदीयां मूर्ध्न्युपाददे
I have placed your command, called the great favor, upon my head.
किंचिद्विज्ञप्तुकामोहं तन्मदर्थं करोषि चेत्
If you wish to inform me of something, do it for my sake.
अविलंबेन तद्ब्रूहि कृतं मन्यस्व पार्थिव
Speak it without delay; consider it done, O king.
तदादिविष(प?)दो देवा दिवि तिष्ठंतु मा भुवि
Then let the gods remain in heaven; let them not be on earth.
देवेषु दिवितिष्ठत्सु मयि तिष्ठति भूतले
While the gods dwell in heaven, I remain upon the earth.
तथेति विश्वसृक्प्रोक्तो दिवोदासो नरेश्वरः
Thus spoke the creator of the universe, and Divodāsa, lord of men.
मा गच्छंत्विह वै नागा नराः स्वस्था भवंत्वितः
Let the serpents not come here; let men remain well from here.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे ब्रह्मा विश्वेशं प्रणिपत्य ह 4.1.39.
Meanwhile, Brahmā, having bowed to the lord of the universe—
लोकेश्वर समायाहि मंदरो नाम भूधरः
O lord of the world, come; Mandara is the name of the mountain.
यावस्तस्मै वरं दातुं बहुकालं तपस्यते
He has been performing austerities for a long time, wishing to receive a boon from you.
जगाम वृषमारुह्य मंदरो यत्र तिष्ठति
He went, mounting the bull, to where Mandara stands.
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भद्रं ते वरं ब्रूहि धरोत्तम
Rise, rise, blessings to you; speak your boon, O best of mountains.
प्रणम्य बहुशो भूमावद्रिरेतद्व्यजिज्ञपत्
Having bowed many times upon the earth, he addressed and informed him thus.
सर्वज्ञोपि कथं नाम न वेत्थ मम वांछितम्
Though you are all-knowing, how is it that you do not know my desire?
सर्वेषां हृदयानंद शर्वसर्वगसर्वकृत्
You are the joy of all hearts, the all-pervading, the creator of all, O Śarva.
याचकायातिशोच्याय प्रणतार्तिप्रभंजक
To the supremely pitiable supplicant, you are the destroyer of the suffering of those who bow.
कुशद्वीप उमा सार्धं नाथाद्य सपरिच्छदः
On Kuśadvīpa, the Lord, together with Umā and his attendants, is present today.
सर्वेषां सर्वदः शंभुः क्षणं यावद्विचिंतयेत् प्रणम्याग्रेसरो भूत्वा मौलौ बद्धकरद्वयः ।। 4.1.39.
Śaṃbhu, the giver to all, contemplates for a moment; having bowed, he becomes the foremost, with both hands joined upon his crown.
कृतप्रसादेन विभो सृष्टिं कर्तुं चतुर्विधाम्
By the grace of the Lord, he undertook to create the fourfold creation.
प्रयत्नेन मया सृष्टा सा सृष्टिस्त्वदनुज्ञया
With effort, I created that creation, and it was accomplished by your permission.
अराजकं महच्चासीद्दुरवस्थमभूज्जगत्
The world became vast and without a ruler, falling into a difficult state.
मयाभिषिक्तो राजर्षिः प्रजाः पातुं नरेश्वरः
I anointed a royal sage as king, O lord of men, to protect the people.
तवाज्ञया चेत्स्थास्यंति सर्वे दिविषदो दिवि
By your command, all the celestial beings will remain in heaven.
तथेति च मया प्रोक्तं प्रमाणीक्रियतां तु तत्
I said, 'So be it'; let that be established as authority.
तस्य राज्ञः प्रजास्त्रातुं भूयाच्चैष मनोरथः
May this wish of the king to protect his subjects be fulfilled.
मर्त्यानां गणना क्वेह निमेषार्ध निमेषिणाम्
Where is the counting of mortals here, or even half a blink for those who blink?
विधेश्च गौरवं रक्षंस्तथोरी कृतवान्हरः
Protecting the dignity of the Creator, Hara also performed the rite for the cow.
तथा बहुतिथं कालं द्वीपोभूत्सोपि मंदरः 4.1.39.
Thus, for a long time, that island became Mandara.
