प्रावृत्य वाससा मौलिं मौनी विण्मूत्रमुत्सृजेत्
A silent one should cover his head with a garment and then discharge urine and feces.
भीतिषु प्राणबाधायां कुर्यान्मलविसर्जनम्
In times of fear or threat to life, one may relieve oneself.
नांघ्री प्रतापयेदग्नौ न वस्त्वशुचि निक्षिपेत्
One should not warm the feet by fire, nor place impure things down.
न संविशेत संध्यायां प्रत्यक्सौम्यशिरा अपि
One should not lie down at twilight, even with the head facing north or east.
नाचक्षीत धयंतीं गां नेंद्रचापं प्रदर्शयेत्
One should not point out a cow that is being milked, nor show the rainbow.
पंथानं नैकलो यायान्न वार्यंजलिना पिबेत्
One should not travel alone on a path, nor drink water with joined hands.
स्त्रीधर्मिण्या नाभिवदेन्नाद्यादातृप्ति रात्रिषु
One should not address a woman in her courses, nor eat at night until fully satisfied.
श्राद्धं कृत्वा पर श्राद्धे योऽश्नीयाज्ज्ञानवर्जितः 4.1.38.
Having performed a śrāddha, one who eats at another's śrāddha without knowledge is at fault.
न धारयेदन्यभुक्तं वासश्चो पानहावपि
One should not wear garments or shoes used by others.
आरोहणं गवां पृष्ठे प्रेतधूमं सरित्तरम्
One should not mount the back of cows, nor cross funeral smoke or a river.
स्नात्वा न मार्जयेद्गात्रं विसृजेन्न शिखां पथि
After bathing, one should not rub the body, nor discard hair-tufts on the path.
नोत्पाटयेल्लोमनखं दशनेन कदाचन
One should never pull out hair or nails with the teeth.
शुभायन यदायत्यां त्यजेत्तत्कर्म यत्नतः
When a journey is auspicious, one should carefully avoid improper acts.
क्रीडेन्नाक्षैः सहासीत न धर्मघ्नैर्न रोगिभिः
One should not play dice, nor sit with those who violate dharma or are diseased.
आर्द्रपादकरास्योश्नन्दीर्घकालं च जीवति
He who has moist feet, hands, and mouth lives long.
शयनस्थो न चाश्नीयान्नपिबेन्न जपेद्द्विजः
A twice-born should not eat, drink, or recite while lying down.
सर्वं तिलमयं नाद्यात्सायं शर्माभिलाषुकः
One desiring well-being should not eat food made entirely of sesame in the evening.
नाधितिष्ठेत्तुषांगार भस्मकेशकपालिकाः 4.1.38.
One should not sit upon husks, charcoal, ashes, hair, or skulls.
श्रावयेद्वैदिकं मंत्रं न शूद्राय कदाचन
One should never recite a Vedic mantra to a Shudra.
धर्मोपदेशः शूद्राणां स्वश्रेयः प्रतिघातयेत्
Instruction in dharma to Shudras would obstruct their own welfare.
कंडूयनं हि शिरसः पाणिभ्यां न शुभं मतम्
It is not considered auspicious to scratch the head with the hands.
अशास्त्रवर्तिनो भूपाल्लुब्धात्कृत्वा प्रतिग्रहम्
Having accepted gifts from a king who does not follow the scriptures, or from a greedy one—
अकालविद्युत्स्तनिते वर्षर्तौ पांसुवर्षणे
At the time of unseasonal lightning, thunder, or rain of dust during the rainy season—
उल्कापाते च भूकंपे दिग्दाहे मध्यरात्रिषु
At the fall of meteors, during earthquakes, when the quarters are burning, or at midnight—
दर्शाष्टकासु भूतायां श्राद्धिकं प्रतिगृह्य च
When evil omens appear on new and full moon days, or after accepting offerings for the dead—
खरोष्ट्रक्रोष्ट्र विरुते समवाये रुदत्यपि
When there is the braying of donkeys, camels, or jackals, or when there is a gathering and even weeping—
आरण्यकमधीत्यापि बाणसाम्नोरपि ध्वनौ
Even after studying the Aranyaka, or when the sound of the Bānasāman is heard—
कृतांतरायो न पठेद्भेकाखु श्वाहि बभ्रुभिः 4.1.38.
If there is an interruption, one should not recite when there are frogs, mice, dogs, or mongooses.
अनायुष्यकरं चैव परदारोपसर्पणम्
Approaching another man's wife indeed causes loss of lifespan.
पूर्वर्द्धिभिः परित्यक्तमात्मानं नावमानयेत्
One should not despise oneself, abandoned by former prosperity.
