भुंजानोऽतिथिशेषान्नमिहायुर्धनभाग्भवेत्
By eating the food left for the guest, one attains long life and wealth here.
वैश्वदेवांत संप्राप्तः सूर्योढो वातिथिः स्मृतः
The guest who arrives at the end of the Vaiśvadeva rite at sunset is called an atithi.
बलिपात्रकरे विप्रे यद्यन्योतिथिरागतः
If, while a Brahmin is preparing the offering, another guest arrives,
कुमाराश्च स्ववासिन्यो गर्भिण्योऽतिरुजान्विताः
— whether they are boys, women of the household, pregnant women, or those suffering greatly —
पितृदेवमनुष्येभ्यो दत्त्वाश्नात्यमृतं गृही
After giving to ancestors, gods, and humans, the householder eats food that is like nectar.
माध्याह्निकं वैश्वदेवं गृहस्थः स्वयमाचरेत्
The householder himself should perform the midday Vaiśvadeva rite.
एतत्सायंतनं नाम वैश्वदेवं गृहाश्रमे
This is called the evening Vaiśvadeva in the householder’s stage of life.
वैश्वदेवेन ये हीना आतिथ्येन विवर्जिताः 4.1.38.
Those who are deprived of Vaiśvadeva and hospitality,
अकृत्वा वैश्वदेवं तु भुंजते ये द्विजाधमाः
And those inferior twice-born who eat without performing Vaiśvadeva,
वेदोदितं स्वकं कर्म नित्यं कुर्यादतंद्रितः
One should always perform one’s own duties as prescribed in the Vedas, without laziness.
षष्ठ्यष्टम्योर्वसेत्पापं तैले मांसे सदैव हि
Sin always resides in oil and meat on the sixth and eighth days.
उदयं तं न चेक्षेत नास्तं यंतं न मध्यगम्
One should not look at the sun when it rises, when it sets, or when it is at its zenith.
न वीक्षेतात्ममनोरूपमाशुधावेन्न वर्षति
One should not look at one’s own reflection in impure water, nor when it is raining.
देवतायतनं विप्रं धेनुं मधुमृदं घृतम्
A temple, a Brahmin, a cow, honey, clean earth, and ghee—
अश्वत्थं चैत्यवृक्षं च गुरुं जलभृतं घटम्
— the sacred fig tree, a shrine tree, a teacher, a water-carrying pot —
रजस्वलां न सेवेत नाश्नीयात्सह भार्यया
One should not approach a menstruating woman, nor eat together with one’s wife at that time.
नाश्नंतीं स्त्रीं समीक्षेत तेजस्कामो द्विजोत्तमः
A twice-born man who desires spiritual energy should not look at a woman who is eating.
पक्वान्नं चापि नो मांसं दीर्घकालं जिजीविषुः 4.1.38.
One who wishes for long life should not eat cooked food or meat that has been kept for a long time.
न गर्तेषु ससत्वेषु न तिष्ठन्न व्रजन्नपि
Whether standing, sitting, or walking, one should not relieve oneself in holes inhabited by living beings.
अभिपश्यन्न कुर्वीत मलमूत्रविसर्जनम्
One should not pass urine or feces while looking at living creatures.
प्रावृत्य वाससा मौलिं मौनी विण्मूत्रमुत्सृजेत्
A silent one should cover his head with a garment and then discharge urine and feces.
भीतिषु प्राणबाधायां कुर्यान्मलविसर्जनम्
In times of fear or threat to life, one may relieve oneself.
नांघ्री प्रतापयेदग्नौ न वस्त्वशुचि निक्षिपेत्
One should not warm the feet by fire, nor place impure things down.
न संविशेत संध्यायां प्रत्यक्सौम्यशिरा अपि
One should not lie down at twilight, even with the head facing north or east.
नाचक्षीत धयंतीं गां नेंद्रचापं प्रदर्शयेत्
One should not point out a cow that is being milked, nor show the rainbow.
पंथानं नैकलो यायान्न वार्यंजलिना पिबेत्
One should not travel alone on a path, nor drink water with joined hands.
स्त्रीधर्मिण्या नाभिवदेन्नाद्यादातृप्ति रात्रिषु
One should not address a woman in her courses, nor eat at night until fully satisfied.
श्राद्धं कृत्वा पर श्राद्धे योऽश्नीयाज्ज्ञानवर्जितः 4.1.38.
Having performed a śrāddha, one who eats at another's śrāddha without knowledge is at fault.
न धारयेदन्यभुक्तं वासश्चो पानहावपि
One should not wear garments or shoes used by others.
आरोहणं गवां पृष्ठे प्रेतधूमं सरित्तरम्
One should not mount the back of cows, nor cross funeral smoke or a river.
