यज्ञस्थायर्त्विजे दैवस्तज्जःपाति चतुर्दश
The Daiva marriage is performed at the sacrificial altar for the officiating priest.
सहोभौ चरतां धर्ममित्युक्त्वा दीयतेर्थिने
Both together, having declared their adherence to dharma, are given to the seeker.
चत्वार एते विप्राणां धर्म्याः पाणिग्रहाः स्मृताः
These four are remembered as righteous forms of marriage for Brahmins.
प्रसह्यकन्याहरणाद्राक्षसो निंदितः सताम्
The Rakshasa marriage, involving the forcible taking of the bride, is condemned by the virtuous.
प्रायः क्षत्रविशोरुक्ता गांधर्वासुरराक्षसाः
Generally, Gandharva, Asura, and Rakshasa marriages are spoken of among Kshatriyas and Vaishyas.
सवर्णया करो ग्राह्यो धार्यः क्षत्रियया शरः
Marriage should be contracted with one of the same varna; for a Kshatriya, the arrow is to be upheld.
असवर्णस्त्वेष विधिः स्मृतो दृष्टश्च वेदने
But this rule is remembered for those not of the same varna, and is seen in practice.
धर्म्यैर्विवाहैर्जायंते धर्म्या एव शतायुषः 4.1.38.
From righteous marriages are born those who live a hundred years, righteous themselves.
ऋतुकालाभिगमनं धर्मोयं गृहिणः परः
Approaching one's wife at the proper time is the highest dharma for a householder.
दिवाभिगमनं पुंसामनायुष्यं परं मतम्
Approaching women during the day is considered by the wise as detrimental to longevity.
तत्र गच्छन्स्त्रियं मोहाद्धर्मात्प्रच्यवते परात्
There, one who approaches a woman out of delusion deviates from dharma and the highest good.
ऋतुकालाभिगामी यः स्वदारनिरतश्च यः
He who approaches his wife at the proper time and is devoted to her alone,
ऋतुः षोडशयामिन्यश्चतस्रस्ता सुगर्हिताः
The menstrual period lasts sixteen nights; four of these are well suited.
त्यक्त्वा चंद्रमसं दुःस्थं मघां पौष्णं विहाय च शुचिं पुत्रं प्रसूयेत पुरुषार्थप्रसाधकम्
Avoiding the nights of the moon, the difficult Magha, and Pausha, one should produce a pure son, who fulfills the aims of life.
आर्षे विवाहे गोद्वंद्वं यदुक्तं तन्न शस्यते
In the Ṛṣi marriage, what is called the exchange of cattle is not recommended.
अपत्यविक्रयी कल्पं वसेद्विट्कृमिभोजने
One who sells offspring should live as one who eats excrement and worms.
स्त्रीधनान्युपजीवंति ये मोहादिह बांधवाः
Those relatives who subsist on a woman's property here out of delusion—
पत्या तुष्यति यत्र स्त्री तुष्येद्यत्र स्त्रिया पतिः 4.1.38.
Where the wife is pleased by the husband, and the husband is pleased by the wife—
वाणिज्यं नृपतेः सेवा वेदानध्यापनं तथा
Trade, service to the king, and teaching the Vedas—
कुर्याद्वैवाहिके वह्नौ गृह्यकर्मान्वहं गृही
One should perform household rites daily at the marital fire.
गृहस्थाश्रमिणः पंच सूना कर्म दिने दिने
There are five daily acts of violence for the householder.
तासां च पंचसूनानां निराकरणहेतवः
And there are causes for the removal of those five acts of violence.
पाठनं ब्रह्मयज्ञः स्यात्तर्पणं च पितृ क्रतुः
Recitation is the sacrifice to Brahman; offering is the rite for the ancestors.
पितृप्रीतिं प्रकुर्वाणः कुर्वीत श्राद्धमन्वहम्
One who seeks the pleasure of the ancestors should perform the śrāddha daily.
गोदानेन च यत्पुण्यं पात्राय विधिपूर्वकम्
The merit gained by giving a cow, according to rule, to a worthy recipient—
तपोविद्यासमिद्दीप्ते हुतं विप्रास्य पावके
When austerity and knowledge are ablaze, the offering made in the priest's fire—
अनर्चितोऽतिथिर्गेहाद्भग्नाशो यस्य गच्छति
The guest who is not honored departs from the house with broken hope.
सांत्वपूर्वाणि वाक्यानि शय्यार्थे भूस्तृणोदके 4.1.38.
Words of consolation, a bed, earth, grass, and water for the guest—
गृहस्थः परपाकादी प्रेत्य तत्पशुतां व्रजेत्
A householder who eats another's food after death attains the state of an animal.
आदित्योढोऽतिथिः सायं सत्कर्तव्यः प्रयत्नतः
A guest who arrives at sunset should be honored with great care.
