अध्यापयेच्छुचीञ्शिष्यान्हितान्मेधासमन्वितान् 4.1.35.
He should instruct pure disciples who are well-disposed and endowed with intelligence.
ॐभूर्भुवःस्वःस्वाहेति विप्रो दद्यात्तथाहुतिम् 4.1.35.
Reciting 'Om Bhūḥ Bhuvaḥ Svaḥ Svāhā,' the brāhmaṇa should likewise offer the oblation.
प्रतिगृह्णंत्विमं पिंडं काका भूमौ मयार्पितम् 4.1.35.
Let the crows accept this rice-ball, which I have placed on the ground.
विधायान्नमनग्नं तदुपरिष्टादधस्तथा 4.1.35.
Having placed the food, not naked, both above and below it.
अंगुष्ठमात्रः पुरुषस्त्वंगुष्ठं च समाश्रितः 4.1.35.

स्कंद उवाच पुनर्विशेषं वक्ष्यामि सदाचारस्य कुंभज
Skanda said: I will again speak in detail about right conduct, O son of the pot.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्यास्त्रयो वर्णा द्विजाः स्मृताः
Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas—these three classes are known as twice-born.
एषां क्रियानिषेकादि श्मशानांता च वैदिकी
For them, the Vedic rites begin with conception and end with the cremation ground.
स्पंदनात्प्राक्पुंसवनं सीमंतोन्नयनं ततः
Before the first movement, the Puṃsavana is performed; then comes Sīmantonnayana.
नामाह्न्येकादशे गेहाच्चतुर्थेमासि निष्क्रमः
On the eleventh day, the naming ceremony is done at home; in the fourth month, the child is taken outside.
शममेनो व्रजेदेवं बैजं गर्भजमवे च
One should perform the Śama and Mena rites, as well as the Baija and Garbhaja ceremonies.
सप्तमेथाष्टमेवाब्दे सावित्रीं ब्राह्मणोर्हति
In the seventh or eighth year, the Brāhmaṇa is eligible for the Sāvitrī initiation.
ब्रह्मतेजोभिवृद्ध्यर्थं विप्रोब्देपंचमेर्हति
For the increase of Brahmanic brilliance, the Brāhmaṇa is eligible in the fifth year.
महाव्याहृतिपूर्वं च वेदमध्यापयेद्गुरुः
The teacher should instruct the Veda, beginning with the great Vyāhṛtis.
पूर्वोक्तविधिना शौचं कुर्यादाचमनं तथा 4.1.36.
According to the procedure previously described, one should perform purification and also ācamana.
स्नात्वांबुदैवतैर्मंत्रैः प्राणानायम्य यत्नतः
Having bathed, with mantras to the water deities, and having restrained the breaths with care,
अग्निकार्यं ततः कृत्वा ब्राह्मणानभिवादयेत्
Then, after performing the fire ritual, one should salute the Brāhmaṇas.
अभिवादनशीलस्य वृद्धसेवारतस्य च
One who is devoted to salutation and engaged in serving elders—
अधीते गुरुणा हूतः प्राप्तं तस्मै निवेदयेत्
What is learned, offered by the teacher, should be reported to him when attained.
अध्याप्याधर्मतोनार्थात्साध्वाप्तज्ञानवित्तदाः
One should not teach for the sake of unrighteousness or profit, but only to those who are virtuous, who have attained knowledge, and who give wealth.
धारयेन्मेखलादंडोपवीताजिनमेव च
One should wear the girdle, staff, sacred thread, and deer skin.
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशामादिमध्यावसानतः
For Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas, the beginning, middle, and end are prescribed respectively.
वाग्यतो गुर्वनुज्ञातो भुंजीतान्नमकुत्सयन्
Having restrained speech and with the teacher’s permission, one should eat food without disdain.
अनारोग्यमनायुष्यमस्वर्ग्यंचातिभोजनम्
Excessive eating leads to disease, short life, and absence from heaven.
न द्विर्भुंजीत चैकस्मिन्दिवा क्वापि द्विजोत्तमः 4.1.36.
A twice-born should not eat twice in one day at any place.
मधुमांसं प्राणिहिंसां भास्करालोकनांजने
Honey, meat, violence against living beings, and applying collyrium in sunlight—
औपनायनिकः कालो ब्रह्मक्षत्र विशां परः
The prescribed time for initiation is different for Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas.
इतोप्यूर्ध्वं न संस्कार्याः पतिता धर्मवर्जिताः
Beyond this, those fallen and devoid of righteousness are not to be initiated.
