नाभेरधस्तु तिसृभिः पादौ षड्भिर्विशोधयेत् मज्जेत्प्रवाहाभिमुख आपो अस्मानिमं जपन् ।।4.1.35.
Below the navel, with three handfuls, one should cleanse the feet with six; let him immerse himself facing the current, reciting this mantra over the waters.
प्रणवं त्रिर्जपेद्वापि विष्णुं वा संस्मरेत्सुधीः आचम्य च ततः कुर्यात्प्रातःसंध्यां कुशान्विताम् 4.1.35.
He should recite the sacred syllable Om three times, or remember Viṣṇu, the wise man; then, having performed ācamana, he should undertake the morning sandhyā with kuśa grass.
एकं संभोज्य विधिवद्ब्राह्मणं यत्फलं लभेत् 4.1.35.
By properly feeding a single brāhmaṇa, one attains the fruit prescribed.
गृहाद्बहुगुणा यस्मात्संध्या बहिरुपासिता 4.1.35.
Because the sandhyā performed outside the house yields many times greater results.
नक्तं दिनं निमज्ज्याप्सु कैवर्ताः किमु पावनाः 4.1.35.
If boatmen, immersing themselves in water by night and day, are purified, then how much more so?
इमं मंत्रं ततश्चोक्त्वा कुर्यादाचमनं द्विजः 4.1.35.
Then, having recited this mantra, the twice-born should perform ācamana.
सहस्रकृत्वो गायत्र्याः शतकृत्वोथवा पुनः 4.1.35.
A thousand times with the Gāyatrī, or a hundred times again.
अर्चितः सविता सूते सुतान्पशु वसूनि च
When Savitṛ is worshipped, he bestows sons, cattle, and wealth.
अन्वारब्धेन सव्येन तर्पयेत्षड्विनायकान् 4.1.35.
With the consecrated left hand, he should satisfy the six Vināyakas.
उदीरतामगिंरस आयंतुन इतीष्यते 4.1.35.
Let the Agniṣṭoma priests proclaim: 'Let the Soma flow forth.'
अध्यापयेच्छुचीञ्शिष्यान्हितान्मेधासमन्वितान् 4.1.35.
He should instruct pure disciples who are well-disposed and endowed with intelligence.
ॐभूर्भुवःस्वःस्वाहेति विप्रो दद्यात्तथाहुतिम् 4.1.35.
Reciting 'Om Bhūḥ Bhuvaḥ Svaḥ Svāhā,' the brāhmaṇa should likewise offer the oblation.
प्रतिगृह्णंत्विमं पिंडं काका भूमौ मयार्पितम् 4.1.35.
Let the crows accept this rice-ball, which I have placed on the ground.
विधायान्नमनग्नं तदुपरिष्टादधस्तथा 4.1.35.
Having placed the food, not naked, both above and below it.
अंगुष्ठमात्रः पुरुषस्त्वंगुष्ठं च समाश्रितः 4.1.35.
A person the size of a thumb resides within the thumb.
अग्निश्चेति च मंत्रेण विधायाचमने सुधीः 4.1.35.
With the mantra 'Agniś ca,' the wise one should perform ācamana.
उद्देशतः समाख्यातो ह्येष नित्यतमो विधिः
This most perpetual rite has been briefly described.
स्कंद उवाच पुनर्विशेषं वक्ष्यामि सदाचारस्य कुंभज
Skanda said: I will again speak in detail about right conduct, O son of the pot.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्यास्त्रयो वर्णा द्विजाः स्मृताः
Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas—these three classes are known as twice-born.
एषां क्रियानिषेकादि श्मशानांता च वैदिकी
For them, the Vedic rites begin with conception and end with the cremation ground.
स्पंदनात्प्राक्पुंसवनं सीमंतोन्नयनं ततः
Before the first movement, the Puṃsavana is performed; then comes Sīmantonnayana.
नामाह्न्येकादशे गेहाच्चतुर्थेमासि निष्क्रमः
On the eleventh day, the naming ceremony is done at home; in the fourth month, the child is taken outside.
शममेनो व्रजेदेवं बैजं गर्भजमवे च
One should perform the Śama and Mena rites, as well as the Baija and Garbhaja ceremonies.
सप्तमेथाष्टमेवाब्दे सावित्रीं ब्राह्मणोर्हति
In the seventh or eighth year, the Brāhmaṇa is eligible for the Sāvitrī initiation.
ब्रह्मतेजोभिवृद्ध्यर्थं विप्रोब्देपंचमेर्हति
For the increase of Brahmanic brilliance, the Brāhmaṇa is eligible in the fifth year.
महाव्याहृतिपूर्वं च वेदमध्यापयेद्गुरुः
The teacher should instruct the Veda, beginning with the great Vyāhṛtis.
पूर्वोक्तविधिना शौचं कुर्यादाचमनं तथा 4.1.36.
According to the procedure previously described, one should perform purification and also ācamana.
स्नात्वांबुदैवतैर्मंत्रैः प्राणानायम्य यत्नतः
Having bathed, with mantras to the water deities, and having restrained the breaths with care,
अग्निकार्यं ततः कृत्वा ब्राह्मणानभिवादयेत्
Then, after performing the fire ritual, one should salute the Brāhmaṇas.
अभिवादनशीलस्य वृद्धसेवारतस्य च
