ज्ञानं मे जनयामास भवांतर समुद्भवम्
Knowledge arose in me, emerging from another existence.
निजं प्राग्भव वृत्तांतं ज्ञानवापीप्रभावजम् कलावत्युवाच एतस्माज्जन्मनः पूर्वमहं ब्राह्मणकन्यका
The account of my previous birth, produced by the power of the pond of knowledge—Kalavati spoke: In a former life, I was a Brahmin maiden.
उपविश्वेश्वरं काश्यां ज्ञानवाप्यां रमे मुदा
In Kashi, at the pond of knowledge, I delighted joyfully in the presence of Lord Shiva.
आख्या मम सुशीलेति मां च विद्याधरोऽहरत्
My name was Sushila, and a Vidyadhara carried me away.
रक्षसा सहतो वीरो राक्षसं स जघानह
A hero, fighting with a demon, slew that Rakshasa.
अवाप जन्मगंधर्वस्त्वसौ मलयकेतुतः
That Gandharva obtained birth from Malayaketu.
इति ज्ञानं ममोद्भूतं ज्ञानवापीक्षणात्क्षणात् 4.1.34.
Thus, knowledge arose in me instantly from seeing the pond of knowledge.
ताश्च तत्परिचारिण्यः प्रहृष्टास्यास्तदाऽभवन्
And those attendants of hers became joyful at that moment.
अहो कथं हि सा लभ्या यत्प्रभावोयमीदृशः
Ah, how indeed is she attained, whose radiance is such as this?
कलावति नमस्तुभ्यं कुरुनोपि समीहितम्
O Kalavati, salutations to you; may you accomplish even what is difficult.
अयं च नियमोस्माकमद्यारभ्य कलावति
From today, this is our vow, O Kalavati:
अवश्यं ज्ञानवापी सा नाम्ना भवितुमर्हति
This pond of knowledge must certainly be named after you.
ॐकृत्य तासां वाक्यं सा स्वाकारं परिगोप्य च
Having uttered 'Om' to their words, she concealed her own form.
कलावत्युवाच त्वामासाद्य पतिं राजन्प्राप्ताः सर्वे मनोरथाः
Kalavati said: Having obtained you as husband, O king, all desires have been fulfilled.
एको मनोरथः प्रार्थ्यो ममास्त्यत्रार्यपुत्रक
I have but one desire to ask here, O noble son.
मम तु त्वदधीनायाः सुदुष्प्रापतरो महान्
But for me, who am dependent on you, it is a great wish, most difficult to obtain.
प्राणेश किं बहूक्तेन यदि प्राणैः प्रयोजनम् 4.1.34.
Lord of life, what need is there for many words, if life itself is the object?
प्राणेभ्योपि गरीयस्यास्तस्या वाक्यं निशम्य सः
Hearing her words, which were weightier even than life, he—
राजोवाच नाहं प्रिये तवादेयमिह पश्यामि भामिनि
The king said: Dearest, I do not see anything here that I would withhold from you, O beautiful one.
अविलंबितमाचक्ष्व कृतं विद्धि कलावति
Speak without delay; know that your wish is already granted, O Kalavati.
कः प्रार्थ्यः प्रार्थनीयं किं को वा प्रार्थयिता प्रिये
What is to be asked? What should be requested? Who is to ask, beloved?
देशः कोशो बलं दुर्गं यदन्यदपि भामिनि
What land, what treasury, what army, what fortress, or anything else, O lovely one?
तच्च स्वाम्यं ममान्यत्र त्वदृते जीवितेश्वरि
All that is under my rule, except for you, O sovereign of my life.
माल्पकेतोर्महीजानेरिति वाक्यं निशम्य सा
Hearing these words of the king, the daughter of the earth—
कलावत्युवाच प्रजाहिताय संसृष्टं पुरुषार्थचतुष्टयम्
Kalavati said: The four aims of human life were established for the welfare of the people.
तद्विहीनाजनिरपि जल बुद्बुदवन्मुधा
A birth lacking those is in vain, like a bubble on water.
यत्रानुकूल्यं दंपत्योस्त्रिवर्गस्तत्र वर्धते 4.1.34.
Where there is harmony between husband and wife, the three aims flourish there.
मद्विधाना तु दासीनां शतं तेऽस्तीह मंदिरे
You have here a hundred maidservants like me in your palace.
तव दास्यपि भोगाढ्या किमुतांकस्थलीचरी
Even among your maidservants, there are those rich in enjoyment—how much more one who moves in your embrace!
विपश्चित्संचयेदर्थानिष्टापूर्ताय कर्मणे
A wise man should gather wealth for the sake of righteous and fulfilling deeds.
