सा प्रत्यहं ज्ञानवाप्यां स्नायं स्नायं शिवालये 4.1.33.
Every day, she bathes and bathes again in the sacred pond of knowledge and in the temple of Shiva.
तत्पादप्रतिबिंबेषु रेखा शष्पांकुरं चरन्
In the reflection of her feet, a line moves like a tender blade of grass.
तदास्य पंकजं हित्वा यूनां नेत्रालिमालया
At that time, leaving her lotus-like face, the swarm of young men’s eyes forms a garland.
सुलोचनापि सा कन्या प्रेक्षेतास्यं न कस्यचित्
Even though she is a maiden with beautiful eyes, she would not look at anyone’s face.
सुशीला शीलसंपन्ना रहस्तद्विरहातुरैः
Virtuous and endowed with good conduct, she remains secluded, pining in separation.
धनैस्तस्याजनेतापि युवभिः प्रार्थितो बहु
Though she could be won with wealth, she was much sought after by young men.
ज्ञानोदतीर्थभजनात्सा सुशीला कुमाग्किा
Through the worship of sacred fords and the rise of knowledge, she became virtuous, O Kumāgkiā.
कदाचिदेकदा तां तु प्रसुप्तां सदनांगणे
Once, at some time, as she lay asleep in the courtyard of her house,
व्योमवर्त्मनितां रात्रौ यावन्मलयपर्वतम्
In the night, while traveling through the sky, as far as Mount Malaya,
राक्षसो भीषणवपुः कपालकृतकुंडलः
A Rākṣasa with a terrifying form, wearing earrings made of skulls,
राक्षस उवाच ममदृग्गोचरं यातो विद्याधरकुमारक 4.1.33.
The Rākṣasa said: 'The Vidyādhara youth has come within my sight.'
इति श्रुत्वाथ सा वाक्यं व्याघ्राघ्राता मृगी यथा
Hearing these words, she was startled like a doe by the scent of a tiger.
निजघान त्रिशूलेन रक्षो विद्याधरं च तम्
The Rākṣasa struck the Vidyādhara with his trident.
तद्भीषणत्रिशूलेन भिन्नोस्को महाबलः
By that dreadful trident, the mighty one was pierced in the chest.
नरमांसवसामत्तं विद्युन्मालिनमाहवे
Intoxicated with human flesh and fat, adorned with lightning, in the battle—
राक्षसो मृत्युवशगो वज्रेणेव महीधरः
The Rākṣasa, overcome by death, was like a mountain struck by a thunderbolt.
उवाच गद्गदं वाक्यं विघूर्णित विलोचनः
His eyes rolling, he spoke words in a faltering voice.
जहौ प्राणान्रणे वीरस्तां प्रियां परितः स्मरन्
The hero gave up his life in battle, remembering his beloved all around.
अनन्यपूर्वसंस्पर्श सुखं समनुभूय सा
She experienced the happiness of a touch never felt before.
लिंगत्रयशरीरिण्यास्तस्याः सान्निध्यतः स हि
Because of the presence of her, who possessed the three marks of gender,
रणे पणीकृतप्राणो विद्याधरसुतोपि सः 4.1.33.
Even the son of the Vidyādharas, who had staked his life in battle,
ध्यायंती सापि तं बाला विद्याधरकुमारकम्
That young girl, too, kept meditating on the Vidyādhara youth.
सुतो मलयकेतोस्तां कालेन परिणीतवान्
In time, the son of Malayaketu married her.
सापि प्राग्वासनायोगाल्लिंगार्चनरता सती
She, too, due to the force of previous habit, remained devoted to the worship of the liṅga.
मुक्ता वैदूर्य माणिक्य पुष्परागेभ्य एव सा
She was adorned with pearls, cat's-eye gems, rubies, and flowers of red hue.
कलावती माल्यकेतुं पतिं प्राप्य पतिव्रता
Kalavati, devoted to her husband, obtained Malyaketu as her spouse.
एकदा कश्चिदौदीच्यो माल्यकेतुं नरेश्वरम्
Once, a certain northerner approached Malyaketu, the king among men.
मुहुर्मुहुः प्रपश्यंती रहसि प्राणदेवताम्
Again and again, she gazed in secret upon her beloved, the very deity of her life.
क्षणमुन्मील्य नयने कृत्वा नेत्रातिथिं पटीम्
For a moment, opening her eyes, she made her gaze a guest, weaving a curtain with her glance.
संभेदोयमसे रम्य उपलोलार्कमग्रतः 4.1.33.
This delightful union is like the playful sun before us.
