Blessed is the Yaksha, supremely fortunate; blessed are those with golden earrings.
They praise the well of knowledge, for even the dwellers of heaven are not equal to it.
Now I shall tell of the origin of the well of knowledge.
In the beginningless and perfected cycle of existence, long ago, in the age of the gods, O sage—
When the clouds did not rain, and the streams did not flow,
When only saline and sweet waters were seen,
The field of the lotus of liberation, the splendid forest of bliss,
The awakener of creatures deeply asleep in great slumber,
A pavilion of rest for beings, weary from ceaseless coming and going,
The abode of existence, consciousness, and bliss, the supreme elixir of Brahman,
Then, the Lord with matted hair entered this field.
He beheld the great liṅga of the supreme Vaikuṇṭha Lord.
Encircled on all sides by garlands made of radiant light,
Constantly worshipped with hymns by hosts of perfected ones and yogis,
Attended in many ways by Apsarases with gestures of service,
Adorned at all three times by Vidyādharīs and Kinnarīs,
Upon seeing that liṅga of the Lord, he resolved to cut it down.
He struck with his trident at the southern side of its base.
Then, O sage, the coverings of the earth were pierced.
With those waters, touched by you and by other embodied beings, cold as frost and dispelling numbness, he performed the ablution.
As if with noble minds, exceedingly pure, and as if with the unobstructed path of the sky.
Sweet as nectar, delightful to the touch, like the milk of cows.
Conquered by the great fragrance of lotuses, and by the delightful scent of pāṭala flowers.
Tormented by the heat of ignorance, protected solely by the guardians of life among living beings.
Touched by faith, with the heart as the sign, caused by the threefold sources.
Bringing supreme happiness through the touch of Uma, the sustainer of the universe.
With pots pouring forth a thousand streams, that Lord, born from the vessel.
Then the blessed Lord, soul of the universe, with eyes encompassing all, became pleased.
I am pleased with you, O Lord, because of this deed, O virtuous one.
Therefore, O ascetic Lord with matted hair, ask for a boon, O wealth of austerity.
