विकसन्मालतीजालं करवीरविराजितम्
With blossoming clusters of mālatī flowers, resplendent with karavīra blooms,
जृंभद्विचकिलामोदं लसत्कंकेलिपल्लवम्
With the fragrance of blooming vicakilā, and tender shoots of kāmkelī shining forth,
पुष्प्यपुन्नागनिकरं बकुलामोदमोदितम् 4.1.32.
With groves of flowering punnāga trees, gladdened by the scent of bakula blossoms,
बहुशोलंबिरोलंब मालामालितभूतलम्
The ground was richly adorned with many garlands hanging down in abundance,
गुरुणाऽगुरुणामत्त भद्रजातिविहंगमम्
Filled with noble birds intoxicated by the heavy scent of aguru,
मेरुतुंग नमेरुस्थच्छायाक्रीडितकिंनरम्
And with kinnara couples playing in the shade of the Meru-high, Meru-like trees.
कदंबानां कदंबेषु गुंजद्रोलंबयुग्मकम्
Among the kadamba trees, there are pairs of bees hanging and humming.
शालतालतमालाली हिंताली लकुचावृतम् नारिकेल तरुच्छन्न नारंगीरागरंजितम्
Shala, tala, tamala, ali, and himtala trees, with clusters of lakucha fruits, are covered by coconut trees and adorned with the fragrance of oranges and agaru.
फलिजंबीरनिकरं मधूकमधुपाकुलम्
There are groves of fruit-laden jambira trees, and clusters of madhuka trees filled with bees.
मधुरामोद दमनच्छन्नं मरुबनोदितम्
The place is shaded by damana creepers with sweet fragrance, and the breeze rises from the sand.
भिल्ली हल्लीसकप्रीति झिल्लीरावविराविणम्
It is filled with the joy of Bhilli and Hallisaka women, and the continuous sound of crickets.
मरालीगलनालीस्थ बिसासक्तसितच्छदम्
There are white lotuses with broad leaves, attached to the stems where swans dwell.
बकशावकसंचारं लक्ष्मणासक्त सारसम् 4.1.32.
There are young herons wandering, and cranes attached to Lakshmana.
चंद्रकांतशिलासुप्तकृष्णैणहरितोडुपम् दर्शयन्नित्थमाक्रीडं देव्यै देवोविशद्वनम् ।। 4.1.32.
On moonstone slabs, black antelopes sleep, appearing green like stars; thus the god showed the clear forest to the goddess as a playground.
ब्रह्मज्ञानं न विंदंति योगैरेकेन जन्मना 4.1.32.
Even yogis do not attain knowledge of Brahman in a single birth.
पुण्यवानितरो वापि मम क्षेत्रस्य सेवया
Whether more or less virtuous, one becomes so by serving my sacred field.
विधाय क्षेत्रसंन्यासं ये वसंतीह मानवाः 4.1.32.
Those people who, having renounced the field, live here—
सत्वावलंबितप्राणमायुःशेषेणरक्षितम् 4.1.32.
Their life, supported by virtue, is preserved for the remainder of their lifespan.
श्रुत्वोदितां तस्य महेश्वरो गिरं मृद्वीकया साम्यमुपेयुषीं मृदु 4.1.32.
Hearing those gentle words spoken by him, Maheshvara, with a voice as soft as ripe grapes, became calm.
मद्भक्तियुक्तोपि विना त्वदीयां भक्तिं न काशी वसतिं लभेत 4.1.32.
Even one endowed with devotion to me, without devotion to you, cannot obtain residence in Kashi.
धन्यो यक्षः पूर्णभद्रो धन्या कांचनकुंडला 4.1.32.
Blessed is the Yaksha, supremely fortunate; blessed are those with golden earrings.
ज्ञानवापीं प्रशंसंति यतः स्वर्गौकसोप्यलम्
They praise the well of knowledge, for even the dwellers of heaven are not equal to it.
ज्ञानवाप्याः समुत्पत्तिं कथ्यमानां मयाधुना
Now I shall tell of the origin of the well of knowledge.
अनादिसिद्धे संसारे पुरा देवयुगे मुने
In the beginningless and perfected cycle of existence, long ago, in the age of the gods, O sage—
न वर्षंति यदाभ्राणि न प्रावर्तंत निम्रगाः
When the clouds did not rain, and the streams did not flow,
क्षारस्वादूदयोरेव यदासीज्जलदर्शनम्
When only saline and sweet waters were seen,
निर्वाणकमलाक्षेत्रं श्रीमदानंदकाननम्
The field of the lotus of liberation, the splendid forest of bliss,
महाशयनसुप्तानां जंतूनां प्रतिबोधकम्
The awakener of creatures deeply asleep in great slumber,
यातायातातिसंखिन्न जंतुविश्राममंडपम
A pavilion of rest for beings, weary from ceaseless coming and going,
सच्चिदानंदनिलयं परब्रह्मरसायनम्
The abode of existence, consciousness, and bliss, the supreme elixir of Brahman,
