प्रलपंतमिव प्रोच्चैः प्रियं कनककुंडला
My beloved, adorned with golden earrings, seemed to be speaking loudly in delirium.
अत्रोपायोऽस्त्यपत्याप्त्यै विस्रब्धमवधारय
Here is a means for obtaining a child—know this with full confidence.
किमुद्यमवतां पुंसां दुर्लभं हि चराचरे 4.1.32.
What is truly unattainable among moving and unmoving things for those who are diligent?
दैवं हेतुं वदंत्येवं भृशं कापुरुषाः पते
Only the weak, O lord, always speak of fate as the cause.
ततः पौरुषमालंब्य तत्कर्म परिशांतये
Therefore, relying on one's own effort, act to accomplish the task.
अपत्यं द्रविणं दारा हारा हर्म्य हया गजाः
Children, wealth, wives, necklaces, mansions, horses, elephants—
विधातुः शांभवीं भक्तिं प्रिय सर्वे मनोरथाः
All desires, my dear, are fulfilled by devotion to Śambhu, the Lord.
नारायणोपि भगवानंतरात्मा जगत्पतिः
Even Nārāyaṇa, the blessed, the inner self, the lord of the world—
ब्रह्मणः सृष्टिकर्त्तृत्वं दत्तं तेनैव शंभुना
By him alone, Śambhu, was the role of creator given to Brahmā.
मृत्युंजयं सुतं लेभे शिलादोप्यनपत्यवान्
Even Śilāda, though childless, obtained a son, Mṛtyuñjaya.
क्षीरार्णवाधिपतितामुपमन्युरवाप्तवान्
Upamanyu attained lordship over the ocean of milk.
जिगाय शार्ङ्गिणं संख्ये दधीचिः शंभुसेवया
Dadhīci, through service to Śambhu, conquered the wielder of the Śārṅga bow in battle.
मनोरथपथातीतं यच्च वाचामगोचरम् 4.1.32.
That which is beyond the path of desire and beyond the reach of words,
अनाराध्य महेशानं सर्वदं सर्वदेहिनाम्
Without worshipping the great Lord, the giver of all to all beings,
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन शंकरं शरणं व्रज
Therefore, with every effort, seek refuge in Śaṅkara.
इति श्रुत्वा वचः पत्न्याः पूर्णभद्रः स यक्षराट्
Hearing these words from his wife, Pūrnabhadra, the king of the Yakṣas,
दिनैः कतिपयैरेव परिपूर्णमनोरथः
In just a few days, his cherished desire was fulfilled.
नादेश्वरं समभ्यर्च्य कैः कैर्नापि स्वचिंतितम्
Having worshipped the Lord of the region, he attained what he had thought of, by means unknown.
अंतर्वत्न्यथ कालेन तत्पत्नी सुषुवे सुतम्
Then, in due time, his wife, being pregnant, gave birth to a son.
प्रीतिदायं ददौ चाथ भूरिपुत्राननेक्षणात्
He brought joy, and because he had many sons, he did not gaze upon him much.
बालोऽपि पूर्णचंद्राभ वदनो मदनोपमः
Even as a child, with a face like the full moon, he was equal to Kāmadeva in beauty.
यदाष्टवर्षदेशीयो हरिकेशोऽभवच्छिशुः
When the boy Harikeśa reached about eight years of age,
पांसुक्रीडनसक्तोपि कुर्याल्लिंगं रजोमयम् 4.1.32.
Even while absorbed in playing with sand, he would fashion a liṅga out of dust.
आकारयति मित्राणि शिवनाम्नाऽखिलानि सः
He would gather his friends and name them all after Śiva.
धूर्जटे खंडपरशो मृडानीश त्रिलोचन
Dhūrjaṭi, Khaṇḍaparaśu, Mṛḍā, Īśa, and Trilocana—
श्रीकंठनीलकंठेश स्मरारे पार्वतीपते
Śrīkaṇṭha, Nīlakaṇṭha, Īśa, Smarāri, and Pārvatīpati—
अजिनांबरदिग्वासः स्वर्धुनी क्लिन्नमौलिज
Clad in a garment of hide, wearing only the directions, with the waters of the celestial river moistening his hair—
सवयस्कानिति मुहुः समाह्वयति लालयन्
He would repeatedly call his peers by these names, delighting in it.
पद्भ्यां न पद्यते चान्यदृते भूतेश्वराजिरात्
He would not step with his feet anywhere except on the ground consecrated to the Lord of beings.
रसयेत्तस्य रसना हरनामाक्षरामृतम्
His tongue would savor the nectar of syllables that are the names of Hari.
