ब्रह्महत्यादि पापानि यस्या नाम्नोपि कीर्तनात् 4.1.31.
Even the sins of killing Brahmins and others are destroyed by the mere recitation of whose name.
महाश्मशानमासाद्य यदि देवाद्विपद्यते 4.1.31.
If, upon reaching the great cremation ground, one falls from the gods,
तीर्थे कालोदके स्नात्वा कृत्वा तर्पणमत्वरः 4.1.31.
Having bathed in the sacred waters of the holy place and performed the offering without delay,
कोसौ कस्य सुतः श्रीमान्कीदृगस्य तपो महत्
Who is he, whose son is he, O illustrious one, and what is his great austerity?
कथं च देवदेवस्य प्रियत्वं समुपेयिवान्
And how did he attain the favor of the god of gods?
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं प्रसादं कुरु मे विभो
I wish to hear this, O Lord; grant me your grace.
संभ्रमो विभ्रमश्चोभौ कथं तदनुगामिनौ
How do both confusion and delusion follow in its wake?
कुंभसंभव विप्रर्षे दंडपाणि कथानकम्
O sage born from a pot, tell the tale of Daṇḍapāṇi.
यदाकर्ण्य नरः प्राज्ञ काशीवासस्य यत्फलम्
Hearing which, O wise one, a man attains the fruit of dwelling in Kāśī.
रत्नभद्र इति ख्यातः पर्वते गंधमादने
There was one named Ratnabhadra, renowned on Mount Gandhamādana.
पूर्णभद्रं सुतं प्राप्य सोऽभूत्पूर्णमनोरथः
Having obtained a son, Pūrṇabhadra, he became fulfilled in all his desires.
शांभवेनाथ योगेन देहमुत्सृज्य पार्थिवम्
Then, through the yoga of Śambhu, he abandoned his mortal body.
पितर्युपरतेसोऽथ पूर्णभद्रो महायशाः 4.1.32.
After his father passed away, Pūrṇabhadra, famed among men, remained.
सर्वान्मनोरथाँल्लेभे विना स्वर्गैकसाधनम्
He obtained all his desires, except the one means to heaven.
संसारतापसंतप्तावयवामृतसीकरम्
He was like nectar-drops to limbs scorched by the heat of worldly existence.
पूर्णभद्रोऽथ संवीक्ष्य मंदिरं सर्वसुंदरम्
Then Pūrṇabhadra beheld the mansion, beautiful in every way.
शून्यं दरिद्रहृदिव जीर्णारण्यमिवाथवा
Yet it was empty, like the heart of a poor man, or like a decayed forest.
आहूय गृहिणी सोऽथ यक्षः कनककुंडलाम्
Then the Yakṣa summoned his wife, Kanakakuṇḍalā.
न हर्म्यं सुखदं कांते दर्पणोदरसुंदरम्
O beloved, this mansion, though lovely as a mirror’s reflection, brings no joy.
पद्मरागेंद्रनीलार्चिरर्चिताट्टालकं क्वणत्
Its turrets are adorned with the glow of padmarāga and sapphire gems.
प्रेंखत्पताकानिकरं मणिमाणिक्यमालितम्
It is decked with fluttering banners and garlanded with jewels and rubies.
अनर्घ्यासनसंयुक्तं चारुपर्यंकभूषितम्
It is furnished with priceless seats and adorned with charming couches.
सुरम्यरतिशालाढ्यं वाजिराजिविराजितम् 4.1.32.
Rich with delightful pleasure-halls, it is graced by noble horses.
नूपुरारावसोत्कंठ केकिकेकारवाकुलम्
It resounds with the longing clamor of anklets and is filled with the cries of peacocks.
खेलन्मरालयुगलं जीवं जीवककांतिमत्
The pair of playful eyes, radiant with the luster of life.
कर्पूरैण मदामोद सोदरानिलवीजितम्
Fanned by a gentle breeze fragrant with the scent of camphor and musk.
दाडिमीबीजसंभ्रांतशुकतुंडात्तमौक्तिकम्
With lips red as pomegranate seeds, adorned with pearls between the beaks of parrots.
कमलामोदगर्भं च गर्भरूपं विना प्रिये
Containing the fragrance of lotus, yet without the form of a womb, my beloved.
यद्युपायोऽस्ति तद्ब्रूहि धिगपुत्रस्य जीवितम्
If there is any means, tell me that; cursed be the life of a sonless man.
धिगेतत्सौधसौंदर्यं धिगेतद्धनसंचयम्
Cursed be that beauty of mansions, cursed be that accumulation of wealth.
