एकदा तु सुवर्णाद्रेः पार्श्वे दुर्वाससो मुनेः
Once, beside the golden mountain, at the hermitage of the sage Durvāsas,
क्रोशेद्धां तपसस्तस्य शिवाराधनसाधनीम्
We loudly performed austerities there, as a means of worshipping Shiva.
विनीतावप्यसंजातौ तत्त्वोचितसुधीगणौ
Though disciplined, we became arrogant, despite possessing wisdom suited to truth.
स्थलस्य तस्य सौहार्दात्कांतिशाल्यतिगर्वितः
Because of the affection for that place, and excessive pride in its splendor.
अहं तु तत्र पुष्पाणां गंधातिशयमोहितः
I, however, was utterly captivated by the extraordinary fragrance of those flowers.
ततः शांडिल्यमूलस्थो व्याघ्रचर्मासने स्थितः
Then, seated at the root of the Śāṇḍilya tree upon a tiger skin,
अमर्षोत्कर्षनीरंध्रस्पंदमानाधरच्छदः 1.3.2.22.
His lips quivered with intense agitation, overwhelmed by the surge of indignation.
सरोषोऽभूत्तेजसाढ्यो घर्मदंतुरविग्रहः
He became enraged, his body radiating fierce heat, his form tense and burning.
आः पापौ प्रच्युताचारौ कौ युवामतिगर्वितौ
Ah! You two are wicked, your conduct fallen, who are you, so excessively arrogant?
तपोवनमिदं मत्कं पावनं भूतभावनम्
This is my hermitage, a sacred place, the abode of beings, purifying and holy.
पुरवैरिसपर्यायाः पर्यायकमिदं वनम्
This forest is the alternate residence of the enemies of the city.
तदेतत्पादसंचारैर्दूषयन्नेष पातकी
By polluting it with your footsteps, this one is a sinner.
अपरोप्ययमत्युग्रे पतत्वचलकंदरे। प्रसूनगंधलोभाद्यो गंधसारंगतां गतः
Without permission, he entered this exceedingly fierce, precipitous cave; driven by greed for the fragrance of flowers, he has reached the essence of scent.
इति तेनोग्ररोषेण शापवज्रे निपातिते
Thus, struck down by his fierce wrath like a thunderbolt of curse,
अभिधाय च तं देवमाहितांघ्रिपरिग्रहैः
And addressing that god, with hands joined in reverence,
अथातिदीनमनसावावामालोक्य पार्थिव
Then, seeing us with minds utterly dejected, O king,
अभाषत च मैवं भो भवतोः क्वापि दुर्धियोः 1.3.2.22.
He spoke: 'Do not be so, O you two, whose minds are misguided.'
पुरा खलु पुरारातिरध्यतिष्ठच्छुभां सभाम्
Long ago, indeed, the enemy of the city presided over an auspicious assembly.
तदा च देवदेवाय नंदनारण्यदेवता
At that time, for the lord of gods, the deities of the Nandana forest,
बाल्यात्कुतूहलाक्रान्तौ गजाननषडाननौ
Overcome by childhood curiosity, Gajānana and Ṣaḍānana,
अथ ताववदद्देवस्तनयौ फलतर्षितौ
Then the god spoke to those two sons, who were eager for fruit,
इमां समस्तां पृथिवीं लोकालोकेन वेष्टिताम्
This entire earth, encircled by the world and the netherworld,
इत्युक्ते पार्वतीशेन स्मयमानमुखेंदुना
When the lord of Pārvatī had spoken thus, his face shone with a gentle smile.
लंबोदरस्तु देवस्य शोणशैलाकृतेः पितुः
Then Lambodara, son of the god whose form is like the crimson mountain,
तद्दृष्ट्वा तस्य चातुर्यं हेरंबाय त्रियंवकः
Seeing his cleverness, Triyambaka addressed Heramba.
अद्यप्रभृति सर्वेषां फलानामधिनायकः
From this day forth, you are the chief among all fruits.
बभाषे च सभास्तारान्सर्वानपि सुरासुरान् 1.3.2.22.
And he spoke to all the gods and asuras assembled in the hall.
स्थावरोयं ममाकारः शोणाद्रिर्योऽस्य भक्तितः
This form of mine is immovable, like the crimson mountain, due to his devotion.
गिरेः प्रदक्षिणेनास्य यस्य धत्तः पदे रुजम्
Whoever, in circumambulating this mountain, feels pain in his foot,
इति शासनतः शंभोः शोणशैलप्रदक्षिणम्
Thus, by the command of Śambhu, the circumambulation of the crimson mountain
