a woman who, upon reaching youth, remains steady for only three or four days,
Even a husband who is devoted to unrighteousness causes the downfall of women by breaking their virtue.
The wicked-minded one himself falls into a pit of excrement, into hell.
She then drinks her own excrement, is naked, and hangs from a tree.
This vessel of merit must be protected with great effort.
Indeed, with this very body, as ordained by her husband,
What jealousy can there be in a wife who, through the power of devotion to her husband, is without envy?
Here, great fame and an eternal abode in heaven are attained.
Having abandoned good conduct, she forsakes the eternal duty of a wife.
Even Dhanaṃjaya, O sage, by some ascetic devoted to Śiva,
Dhanaṃjaya too was righteous, wholly devoted to his mother.
He was bathed with pañcagavya, and then with pañcāmṛta indeed.
He was wrapped with a cloth for the eyes, and then with a silk garment.
Then with a Nepalese blanket, with pure clay thereafter.
He was of pure conduct, untouched by low birth, possessing cleanliness, and lay upon the bare ground.
By him, a bearer of burdens was appointed, and some wages suitable to a gift were given.
Dhanaṃjaya, having taken up the collected goods for their protection, employed the bearer of burdens.
Having reached the interior of the place for bearing burdens, he placed the collected goods in the midst.
Then, coming to his dwelling place and not seeing him there, Dhanaṃjaya—
Cried out 'Alas!' and struck his heart, lamenting greatly and repeatedly.
Without having bathed in the Ganges, nor having seen the Lord of the world,
He saw, in another forest, within a copper vessel, the bones of the bearer of burdens; sighing, he left them and went home.
And the merchant, reaching his house, with throat, lips, and palate parched,
Regaining a little composure with hope, questioned the wife of that man.
"Where has your husband gone, lady? Give me the bones for my mother."
Unknowing, and out of greed, he was led away with the bundle of bones.
Or perhaps the fault is not in the mother; I am her son, of poor fortune.
I have made the effort, but due to my ill fortune, it did not succeed.
"Show me the bones quickly; I will give you even more wealth for them."
Then, with head bowed in shame, she related the entire account.
