शृण्वंति महिमानं ये गंगाया नित्यमादरात्
Those who always listen with reverence to the greatness of the Ganga,
पितॄनुद्दिश्य यो लिंगं स्नपयेद्गांग वारिणा
Whoever bathes a linga for the ancestors with Ganga water,
अष्टकृत्वो मंत्रजप्तैर्वस्त्रपूतैः सुगंधिभिः
Eight times, with mantra recitations, purified cloths, and fragrant substances,
अष्टद्रव्यविमिश्रेण गंगातोयेन यः सकृत्
With Ganga water mixed with eight substances, whoever, even once—
भानवेऽर्घं प्रदद्याच्च स्वकीय पितृभिः सह
One should offer arghya to the Sun, together with one's ancestors.
आपः क्षीरं कुशाग्राणि घृतं मधुगवांदधि
Water, milk, blades of kuśa grass, ghee, honey, and cow's milk curd—
अष्टांगार्घो यमुद्दिष्टस्त्वतीव रवितोषणः
The eightfold arghya is prescribed for Yama, being especially pleasing to the Sun.
गंगातीरे स्वशक्त्या यः कुर्याद्देवालयं सुधीः 4.1.27.
Whoever, according to his ability, builds a temple on the bank of the Ganges, being wise—
गोभूहिरण्यदानेन भक्त्या गंगातटे शुभे 4.1.27.
By giving cows, land, and gold with devotion on the auspicious bank of the Ganges—
तद्भूमित्रसरेणूनां संख्यया युगमानया 4.1.27.
By the count of the dust particles from that land, multiplied by the measure of an age—
ब्रह्मांडांतरसंस्थेषु भुंजन्भोगान्मनोरमान्
Dwelling within the worlds inside the cosmic egg, he enjoys delightful pleasures.
चंद्रसूर्यग्रहे लक्षं व्यतीपातेत्वनंतकम् 4.1.27.
At the time of lunar or solar eclipses, one should perform a hundred thousand (oblations) without end.
स्वाहांतः प्रणावादिश्च भवेद्विंशाक्षरो मनुः 4.1.27.
The mantra, ending with svāhā and beginning with praṇava, consists of twenty syllables.
यथाशक्ति स्वर्णरूप्य ताम्रपृष्ठविनिर्मितान् 4.1.27.
According to one's ability, (one should offer) items made of gold, silver, and copper.
संसारविषनाशिन्यै जीवनायै नमोस्तु ते 4.1.27.
Homage to you, who destroys the poison of worldly existence, who is the giver of life.
प्रणतार्ति प्रभंजिन्यै जगन्मात्रे नमोस्तुते 4.1.27.
Homage to you, Mother of the world, who breaks the suffering of those who bow to you.
तस्यां दशम्यामेतच्च स्तोत्रं गंगाजले स्थितः 4.1.27.
On that tenth day, standing in the water of the Ganges, one should recite this hymn.
उमोवाच किंचित्प्रष्टुमना नाथ स्वसंदेहापनुत्तये
Umā said: O Lord, I wish to ask something to dispel my own doubts.
तदा भगीरथो राजा क्व क्व भागीरथी तदा
At that time, where was King Bhagiratha, and where was the Bhagirathi (Ganges)?
श्रुतौ स्मृतौ पुराणेषु कालत्रयमुदीर्यते
In the Vedas, Smṛtis, and Purāṇas, the three times are spoken of.
भूतं भावि भवच्चापि संशयं मा वृथा कृथाः
Past, future, and present—do not entertain unnecessary doubt.
पार्वतीनंदन पुनर्द्युनद्याः परितो वद
O son of Pārvatī, tell me again in detail about the celestial river.
स्कंद उवाच शुणु त्रिपथगामिन्या माहात्म्यं पातकापहम्
Skanda said: Hear the greatness of the river that flows in three courses, which removes sins.
त्रिस्रोतसं समासाद्य सकृत्पिंडान्ददाति यः
Whoever, having reached the triple-stream, offers a single ball of food—
यावंतश्च तिला मर्त्यैर्गृहीता पितृकर्मणि
As many sesame seeds as are taken by mortals in the rites for the ancestors—
देवाः सपितरो यस्माद्गंगायां सर्वदा स्थिताः
Because the gods together with the ancestors always dwell in the Ganga—
पितृवंशे मृता ये च मातृवंशे तथैव च 4.1.28.
Those who have died in the paternal line, and likewise in the maternal line,
अजातदंता ये केचिद्ये च गर्भे प्रपीडिताः
Whoever are toothless at birth, and those who were afflicted in the womb,
उद्बंधन मृता ये च पतिता आत्मघातकाः
Those who died at birth, those who fell, and those who took their own lives,
रसविक्रयिणो ये च ये चान्ये पापरोगिणः
Those who sold liquor, and others afflicted by evil diseases,
