सर्वषामेव पात्राणां शिवभक्तो यथा वरः
So among all vessels, the devotee of Shiva is the best,
हरेयश्चावयोर्भेदं न करोति महामतिः
The wise do not make a distinction between us, O Hari,
पापपांसुमहावात्या पापद्रुमकुठारिका
I am the great wind that scatters the dust of sin, the axe that fells the tree of evil,
नानारूपाश्च पितरो गाथा गायंति सर्वदा
The ancestors, of many forms, always sing hymns,
देवर्षीन्परिसंतर्प्य दीनानाथांश्च दुःखितान्
Having satisfied the divine sages, and the poor, the helpless, and the afflicted,
अपि नः स कुले भूयाच्छिवे विष्णौ च साम्यदृक्
May one such as this be born in our lineage, who sees equality in Shiva and Vishnu.
अकामो वा सकामो वा तिर्यग्योनिगतोपि वा
Whether without desire or with desire, or even one born in an animal womb,
तीर्थमन्यत्प्रशंसंति गंगातीरे स्थिताश्च ये 4.1.27.
Those who, standing on the banks of the Ganga, praise any other sacred place,
मां च त्वां चैव यो द्वेष्टि गंगां च पुरुषाधमः
Whoever hates me, you, or the Ganga, that lowest of men—
षष्टिर्गणसहस्राणि गंगां रक्षंति सर्वदा
Sixty thousand hosts always protect the Ganga.
कामक्रोधमहामोहलोभादि निशितैः शरैः
With sharp arrows of desire, anger, great delusion, greed, and the like,
गंगां समाश्रयेद्यस्तु स मुनिः स च पंडितः
He who takes refuge in the Ganga is a sage and a wise man.
गंगायां च सकृत्स्नातो हयमेधफलं लभेत्
One who bathes even once in the Ganga obtains the fruit of a horse sacrifice.
नैरंतर्येण गंगायां मासं यः स्नाति पुण्यवान्
He who bathes in the Ganga continuously for a month becomes virtuous.
अब्दं यः स्नाति गंगायां नैरंतर्येण पुण्यभाक्
He who bathes in the Ganga continuously for a year partakes of merit.
गंगायां स्नाति यो मर्त्यो यावज्जीवं दिनेदिने
A mortal who bathes in the Ganga every day for his whole life—
तिथिनक्षत्रपर्वादि नापेक्ष्यं जाह्नवी जले
In the water of Jahnavi, one need not consider lunar days, stars, or festivals.
पंडितोपि स मूर्खः स्याच्छक्तियुक्तोप्यशक्तिकः 4.1.27.
Even a learned man there becomes a fool, and one with power becomes powerless.
किंवायुपाप्यरोगेण विकासिन्याथ किं श्रिया
What of wind, water, disease, or even blossoming fortune?
यः कारयेदायतनं गंगाप्रतिकृतेर्नरः
Whoever builds a shrine in imitation of the Ganga—
शृण्वंति महिमानं ये गंगाया नित्यमादरात्
Those who always listen with reverence to the greatness of the Ganga,
पितॄनुद्दिश्य यो लिंगं स्नपयेद्गांग वारिणा
Whoever bathes a linga for the ancestors with Ganga water,
अष्टकृत्वो मंत्रजप्तैर्वस्त्रपूतैः सुगंधिभिः
Eight times, with mantra recitations, purified cloths, and fragrant substances,
अष्टद्रव्यविमिश्रेण गंगातोयेन यः सकृत्
With Ganga water mixed with eight substances, whoever, even once—
भानवेऽर्घं प्रदद्याच्च स्वकीय पितृभिः सह
One should offer arghya to the Sun, together with one's ancestors.
आपः क्षीरं कुशाग्राणि घृतं मधुगवांदधि
Water, milk, blades of kuśa grass, ghee, honey, and cow's milk curd—
अष्टांगार्घो यमुद्दिष्टस्त्वतीव रवितोषणः
The eightfold arghya is prescribed for Yama, being especially pleasing to the Sun.
गंगातीरे स्वशक्त्या यः कुर्याद्देवालयं सुधीः 4.1.27.
Whoever, according to his ability, builds a temple on the bank of the Ganges, being wise—
गोभूहिरण्यदानेन भक्त्या गंगातटे शुभे 4.1.27.
By giving cows, land, and gold with devotion on the auspicious bank of the Ganges—
तद्भूमित्रसरेणूनां संख्यया युगमानया 4.1.27.
By the count of the dust particles from that land, multiplied by the measure of an age—
