If a slayer of a Brahmin, by fate, enters the city of Varanasi—
Until the fall of his body, he does not leave Avimukta.
Whoever remains in that field with unwavering mind, not departing—
Let him worship Avimukta, honored by hosts of divine sages.
He should not leave Avimukta, which frees from the fear of worldly existence.
Even after committing thousands of sins, it is better to become a ghost here.
At the time of death, when the vital organs of humans are breaking—
Then, at the moment of departure, Lord of the Universe himself appears.
Knowing that this human life is impermanent and full of many faults—
Even when tossed about by afflictions, whoever does not leave Avimukta—
It destroys heaps of great sins and brings the accumulation of merit.
Thus understanding, the wise man should never abandon Avimukta.
How can I, with six mouths, describe the greatness of Avimukta?
Agastya said: If you are pleased, Skanda, and your affection for me is supreme—
When did this field of Avimukta begin upon the earth?
How is it that Manikarnika, praised in all three worlds, is sung?
O Lord, Varanasi is called Kashi, the abode of Rudra; the delightful Anandakanana and Avimukta are within it.
And how is it known as the Great Cremation Ground, O one with the peacock banner?
This question you have raised is truly weighty and incomparable.
As it was declared by the god of gods, the all-knowing one,
At the time of the great dissolution, when all that is moving and unmoving is destroyed,
When there is no moon, no mind, no day or night, no fire, no wind, and no earth,
Devoid of seer and the seen, and free from sound and touch,
Thus, in that unbroken, impenetrable darkness of truth,
It is beyond the reach of mind and never an object of speech in any way.
It is free from shortness and length, from lightness and heaviness.
Yet, the scripture again hesitantly declares that 'it exists.'
It is immeasurable, without support, changeless, and formless.
It is without distinction, without beginning, without illusion, and without disturbance.
For that One, as it moved alone, a second desire is said to have arisen.
