क्व द्वयक्षरं हरेर्नाम स्फुलिंगसदृशं ज्वलेत 4.1.21.
Where is the two-syllabled name of Hari, blazing like a spark—
गोविंद परमानंदं मुकुंदं मधुसूदनम
Govinda, supreme bliss, Mukunda, slayer of Madhu—
न नमामि न च स्तौमि न पश्यामीह चक्षुषा
I do not bow, nor do I praise, nor do I see here with my eyes—
जले स्थले च पातालेप्यनिले चानलेऽचले
In water, on land, in the netherworld, in air, in fire, and on mountains—
तृणेस्त्रैणे च पाषाणे तरुगुल्मलतासु च
In grass, in deer, in stones, in trees, in thickets, and in vines—
सर्वेषां हृदयावासः साक्षात्साक्षी त्वमेव हि
You alone are the indweller in the hearts of all, the direct witness indeed.
इत्युक्त्वा विररामासौ शिवशर्मन्ध्रुवस्तदा
Having spoken thus, Śivaśarman then became silent.
परिज्ञातो मया सम्यक्तवहृत्स्थो मनोरथः
I have fully understood the desire that dwells in your heart.
अन्नाद्भवंति भूतानि वृष्टेरन्नसमुद्भवः
From food, beings arise; from rain, food is produced.
ज्योतिश्चक्रस्य सर्वस्य ग्रहर्क्षादेः समंततः
The wheel of light of all—the planets, stars, and so on—on every side,
मेढीभूतस्तु वै सर्वान्वायुपाशैर्नियंत्रितान् 4.1.21.
Indeed, all are bound together, restrained by the cords of wind.
आराध्य श्री महादेवं पुरापदमिदं मया
Having worshipped the great Lord before, I obtained this position.
केचिच्चतुर्युगं यावत्केचिन्मन्वंतरं ध्रुव
Some remain for the duration of four yugas, some for a manvantara, O steadfast one.
मनुनापि न यत्प्रापि किमन्यैर्मानवैर्ध्रुव
Even Manu did not attain that which others among men, O steadfast one, could not.
अन्यान्वरान्प्रयच्छामि स्तवेनानेन तोषितः
Satisfied by this hymn, I grant other boons.
इदं स्तोत्रवरं यस्तु पठिष्यति समाहितः
Whoever recites this excellent hymn with concentration—
न तस्य सदनं लक्ष्मीः परित्यक्ष्यत्यसंशयम्
The goddess of fortune will never abandon his dwelling, without a doubt.
ध्रुवस्तुतिरियं पुण्या महापातकनाशिनी
This hymn to Dhruva is auspicious and destroys even great sins.
महापुण्यस्य जननी महासंपत्तिदायिनी ८८ !। यस्याऽस्तिपरमा भक्तिर्मयि निर्मलचेतसः
It is the mother of great merit, the bestower of immense wealth, for one whose mind is pure and who has supreme devotion to me.
समस्त तीर्थस्नानेन यत्फलं लभते नरः 4.1.21.
The fruit that a man obtains by bathing at all the sacred places—
संति स्तोत्राण्यनेकानि मम प्रीतिकराणि च
There are many hymns pleasing to me,
श्रुत्वापीमां स्तुतिं मर्त्यः श्रद्धया परया मुदा
Yet even by merely hearing this hymn with supreme faith and joy, a mortal—
अपुत्रः पुत्रमाप्नोति निर्धनो धनमाप्नुयात्
A childless man obtains a son; a poor man may gain wealth.
दत्त्वा दानान्यनेकानि कृत्वा नाना व्रतानि च
Having given many gifts and performed various vows,
त्यक्त्वा सर्वाणि कार्याणि त्यक्त्वा जप्यान्यनेकशः
Having abandoned all other duties and ceased countless recitations,
श्रीभगवानुवाच ध्रुवावधेहि वक्ष्यामि हितं तव महामते
The Blessed Lord said: Dhruva, listen as I declare what is beneficial for you, O wise one.
अहं जिगमिषुस्त्वासं पुरीं वाराणसीं शुभाम्
I wished to go to the auspicious city of Varanasi.
विपन्नानां च जंतूनां यत्र विश्वेश्वरः स्वयम्
Where Lord of the Universe himself is present among creatures who are afflicted,
अस्य संसारदुःखस्य सर्वोपद्रवदायिनः
Of this worldly suffering, which brings all kinds of calamities,
इदं रम्यमिदं नेति बीजं दुःखमहातरोः 4.1.21.
‘This is delightful, this is not’—such is the seed of the great tree of suffering.
