इति गौर्योदिता दुर्गा जुगुप्साकुलमानसा
Thus addressed by Gaurī, Durgā, her mind filled with disgust,
तीर्थमुत्पाद्यतां देवि नवं पापविनाशनम्
O goddess, create a new sacred place that destroys sin.
इतीरिता गौतमेन दुर्गा दुरितशंकिनी
Thus spoken to by Gautama, Durgā, anxious about evil,
पातालावधि निर्भिन्नात्पाषाणतलतस्ततः 1.3.2.20.
Then, from the stone surface split down to the netherworld,
ममज्ज सापि गंभीरे तस्मिन्नंभसि पावने
She too immersed herself in that deep, pure water.
तावन्महिषकंठस्थं लिंगं तद्गलितं तले
At that moment, the liṅga that was at the neck of the buffalo fell to the ground.
उन्ममज्ज ततो दुर्गा तीर्थांभोधूतकल्मषा
Then Durgā emerged, her sins washed away by the sacred waters of the tīrtha.
कृतप्रदक्षिणा नत्वा पापनाशनमीश्वरम्
Having circumambulated and bowed to the Lord, destroyer of sins,
एवं प्रत्यक्षनिरतपापां तां वीक्ष्य पार्वती
Thus, seeing her freed from all sins before their eyes, Pārvatī
महिषासुरसंहारेंऽजसा स्वनुमतिः कृता
Gave her approval for the slaying of Mahiṣāsura without delay.
गृहीत्वा भक्षयामास तस्य लिंगमिदं शिवम्
She took and consumed that auspicious liṅga of his.
त्वद्ध्यानमेव जगतां सर्वपातकनाशनम्
Indeed, meditation on you alone destroys all the sins of the worlds.
अथापि लौकिकं वृत्तमवलंब्य त्वयेरितम्
Nevertheless, following worldly custom, you performed this act.
अन्तःकरणकालुष्यक्षालिनी काचन क्रिया 1.3.2.20.
There is a certain rite that cleanses the impurity of the inner mind.
अरुणाद्रिरयं साक्षादनलाद्रिस्तिरोहितः
This is Aruṇādri, manifest before us, concealed by the mountain of fire.
तत्सपर्यातपश्चर्या कार्या कात्यायनि त्वया
You, O Kātyāyanī, must perform worship and austerity there.
इत्युक्ता गौतमेनांबा तदाप्रभृति दारुणा
Thus addressed by Gautama, the Mother from that time onward,
तपश्चचार पंचानामग्नीनां मध्यमाश्रिता
Undertook penance, standing amidst five fires.
रेजे हैमी शलाकेव द्योतमाना गिरींद्रजा
The daughter of the mountain shone like a golden rod, radiant.
सा कार्त्तिकी पौर्णमासी समापेदे शुभा तिथिः
That auspicious full-moon day of Kārttikī arrived.
अदर्शि किमपि ज्योतिरनुपाधिकवैभवम्
A certain light appeared, possessing unconditioned splendor.
उपास्यमानमभितो देवैर्दिव्यर्षिसंगतैः
It was being worshipped all around by gods and hosts of divine sages.
महाप्रदीपमालोक्य विस्मयं प्राप पार्वती अरुणाद्रीश्वरं नाथं तुष्टा तुष्टाव शैलजा
Seeing the great light, Pārvatī was filled with wonder; the daughter of the mountain praised Aruṇādri's Lord with devotion.
नमस्ते मेरुचापाय कैलासाचलवासिने 1.3.2.20.
Salutations to you, who wields the bow of Meru and dwells upon Mount Kailāsa.
वरुणादिसुरार्च्याय तरुणादित्यवर्चसे
Salutations to you, honored by Varuṇa and other gods, radiant like the young sun.
जय जह्नुसुताचन्द्र लेखालंकृतशेखर
Victory to you, whose crest is adorned with the crescent moon, the ornament of Jahnu's daughter.
जय शैलसुतासंगसंभृतानंगवैभव
Victory to you, whose union with the mountain's daughter brings forth the glory of Kāma.
जय संध्यासमोपेतसंभृतानंदतांडव
Victory to you, whose blissful dance is joined with the twilight hour.
जय हेरंबजनक जय षण्मुखवत्सल
Victory to you, father of Heramba; victory to you, who cherishes Ṣaṇmukha.
इति स्तुत्वा मुहुस्तस्मिञ्ज्योतिषि न्यस्तलोचनाम्
Having repeatedly praised him, she fixed her gaze upon that radiance.
