Without the sight of your face, I have become as desolate as the moon bereft of its radiance.
Uttering words in imitation of your speech, I murmur softly, like the cooing of a cuckoo.
Longing for the sweetness of your embrace, I am consumed by constant yearning.
O steadfast one, what lands, what rivers, what mountains would I not cross for your sake?
Seeing that all these things are impermanent, I have become indifferent to them.
Your limbs are tender—how could they endure such austerity as this?
My child, what will you gain by this penance, and what is the use of it for you?
At your age, dear child, you should be playing all the time.
Then, upon reaching youth, one should devote oneself to study and contemplation.
And when you attain mature adulthood, you should enjoy the pleasures of sandalwood, garlands, and the company of women.
Afterwards, you should produce many virtuous sons, devoted to righteousness.
At this very age, in childhood, what hardship is there in performing austerities?
When one has been insulted by an adversary and one's honor is taken away—
Hearing the words that one must undergo penance when one's honor is lost, Dhruva—
Without replying to his mother and setting aside all fear of beings—
That host of spirits, adorned with many terrifying ornaments—
Surrounded on all sides, shining with brilliance like the sun at its zenith—
Seeing that host of spirits, blazing with the Sudarshana discus—
His heart was utterly unwavering, his mind devoted to the protector of cows.
She too, facing one who was fearless, was certainly firm and resolute.
Like a tumultuous mass of thunderclouds roaring in the sky.
Then, together with the slayer of Jambha, all the gods became afraid.
Having bowed, they humbly addressed and praised the Grandfather.
All the inhabitants of the three worlds were tormented by his blazing heat.
O dear one, we truly do not understand the intention of Dhruva.
Thus addressed by the gods, the four-faced one smiled.
Let all be free from distress; he does not seek your place.
No one, anywhere, should fear a devotee of the Blessed Lord.
Having worshipped Viṣṇu, the Lord of gods, and obtained his desired boon from him—
Hearing these words, graciously spoken by Brahmā, the gods—
