She enjoys pleasures with her companions, and her days are never barren of charity.
She ever accumulates fame, and ever gathers merit.
She always associates with the virtuous, and maintains friendship with her elders and friends.
Even in adversity she remains steadfast, and in prosperity she is composed.
Her body is slender from austerity, discipline, and restraint.
Therefore, because of insufficient austerity, O wise one, both you and I—
Thus, honor and dishonor arise from one's own actions, not from others; do not grieve, my son, for what is destined and desired should be offered up.
Hearing this great teaching from Sunīti, the wise Sunīti's son—
Dhruva said: Mother Sunīti, listen calmly to my words.
If I am born in the lineage of Manu, supremely pure—
If, mother, austerity is truly the cause of all prosperity—
Then, mother, give me just one help: do not be negligent.
She too, knowing the great valor of the son born from her womb,
I am not able to give you permission, O child lying on your back,
My heart is deeply wounded by the sharp words of co-wives,
I think those wounds flow unceasingly along this path, O child.
You are my only son, dear one, my life depends solely on you.
You have been obtained after many hardships, having earnestly worshipped the gods.
May my breasts overflow with the milk of joy for you.
May you sleep happily on a soft bed, wrapped in a garment that thrills with delight.
May my breasts, filled with milk, be nourished by the touch of your lips.
When your cool, gentle speech reaches my ears,
Whenever you, my dear, sleep for a long time, I keep thinking of you.
Whenever you return home, child, after playing with your toys,
Whenever you come down from the terrace, your feet marked with lotus lines,
Whenever you go outside, son, taking three or four steps,
It is strange, son, how my mind, born of the heart, urges you to go.
So let my hard breaths remain at the edge of the throat's forest,
Thus, having received permission, the mother touched his lotus feet.
She too, with the thread of courage and good conduct, composed herself.
