उवाच च प्रसन्नात्मा स्तुतश्चारणमागधैः
With a tranquil mind, and praised by the bards and minstrels, he spoke.
स्थिता सुतासु निःश्वसस्य मंदभाग्या वयं त्विति
Standing among their daughters, she sighed, 'We are indeed of little fortune.'
इति शृणवन्मुखात्तासां वचनानि विमानगः
Thus, as he listened to their words from their mouths, he, moving in the sky—
इति द्विजवचः श्रुत्वा प्रोचतुर्गणसत्तमौ
Hearing the words of the twice-born, the two excellent hosts replied.
वसंतीह प्रजाः स्रष्टुं विनियुक्ताः प्रजासृजा
They reside here, appointed by the Creator of beings, to produce offspring.
वसिष्ठश्च महाभागो ब्रह्मणो मानसाः सुताः
And Vasistha, greatly fortunate, is a mind-born son of Brahma.
संभूतिरनसूया च क्षमा प्रीतिश्च सन्नतिः
Sambhuti, Anasuya, Kshama, Priti, and Sannati—
एतेषां तपसा चैतद्धार्यते भुवनत्रयम् 4.1.18.
By the austerity of these, indeed, the three worlds are sustained.
प्रजाः सृजत रे पुत्रा नानारूपाः प्रयत्नतः
Create progeny, O sons, of various forms, with effort.
अविमुक्तं समासाद्य क्षेत्रंक्षेत्रज्ञधिष्ठितम्
Reaching Avimukta, the field presided over by the knower of the field—
प्रतिष्ठाप्य च लिंगानि ते स्वनाम्नांकितानि च
And having established the liṅgas, marked with their own names,
प्राजापत्येऽत्र ते लोके वसंत्युज्ज्वलतेजसः
In the world of Prajāpati, they dwell, shining with radiant splendor.
लिंगमत्रीश्वरं दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्मतेजोभिवर्धते
Upon seeing the liṅga of the Lord here, the brilliance of Brahmā increases.
तत्र स्नात्वा नरो भक्त्त्या भ्राजते भास्करो यथा
There, when a man bathes with devotion, he shines like the sun.
तल्लिंगदर्शनाद्विप्र मारीचं लोकमाप्नुयात्
By seeing that liṅga, O brāhmaṇa, one attains the world of Mārīca.
पुलहेश पुलस्त्येशौ स्वर्गद्वारस्य पश्चिमे
At the western gate of heaven are the Lords Pulaha and Pulastya.
हरिकेशवने रम्ये दृष्ट्वैवांगिरसेश्वरम् 4.1.18.
In the delightful forest of Harikeśa, having seen the Lord of Aṅgiras,
वरणायास्तटे रम्ये दृष्ट्वा वासिष्ठमीश्वम्
On the beautiful bank of the Varaṇā, having seen the Lord of Vasiṣṭha,
काश्यामेतानि लिंगानि सेवितानि शुभैषिभिः
In Kāśī, these liṅgas have been worshipped by the virtuous sages.
गणावूचतुः शिवशर्मन्महाभाग तिष्ठते सात्र सुंदरी
The Gaṇas said: O highly fortunate Śivaśarman, that beautiful lady dwells here.
यस्याः स्मरणमात्रेण गंगास्नान फलं लभेत्
By merely remembering her, one obtains the merit of bathing in the Gaṅgā.
सदा नारायणो देवो यस्याश्चक्रे कथां मुदा
The god Nārāyaṇa always joyfully composed her story.
पतिव्रतास्वरुंधत्याः कमले विमलाशयः
Of the devoted wife Svarūndhatī, pure in heart like a lotus.
न तद्रूपं न तच्छीलं न तत्कौलीन्यमेव च
There is no beauty like hers, nor such character, nor such noble birth.
न माधुर्यं न गांभीर्यं न चार्यपरितोषणम्
No such sweetness, no such depth, nor such satisfaction of elders.
धन्यास्ता योषितो लोके सभाग्याः शुद्धबुद्धयः
Blessed are those women in the world, fortunate and pure in understanding.
यदा पतिव्रतानां तु कथास्मद्भवने भवेत् 4.1.18.३० !। ब्रुवतोरिति संकथां तथा गणयोर्वैष्णवयोर्मुदावहाम्
Whenever, in our house, the stories of devoted wives are told, thus the conversation of the two Vaiṣṇava Gaṇas brings joy.
शिवशर्मोवाच अनेकरशनाव्यग्र हस्ताग्रो व्यग्रलोचनः
Śivaśarman said: His waist was bound with many girdles, his hand's end was like a tiger's, and his gaze was like a tiger's.
त्रिलोकीमंडपस्तंभ सन्निभोभाभिरावृतः
He was surrounded by a radiance like a pillar supporting the hall of the three worlds.
सूत्रधार इव व्योम व्यायामपरिमापकः
Like an architect measuring the expanse, he encompassed the immeasurable sky.
