मायामयीं ततश्छायां सवर्णां निर्ममे स्वतः
Then he created from himself the shadow, Māyāmayī, Savarṇā.
तवाज्ञाकारिणीं देवि शाधि मां करवाणि किम्
O goddess, who acts according to your command, instruct me—what shall I do?
अहं यास्यामि सदनं त्वष्टुस्त्वं पुनरत्र मे
I will go to the abode of Tvaṣṭṛ; you, meanwhile, remain here for me.
मनुरेष यमावेतौ यमुना यम संज्ञकौ
This Manu, and these two Yamas, Yamunā and Yama, are named after Saṃjñā.
अनाख्येयमिदं वृत्तं त्वया पत्यौ शुचिस्मिते 4.1.17.
O pure-smiling one, this event must not be revealed by you to your husband.
आकचग्रहणान्नाहमाशापाच्च कदाचन
I shall never be seized by the sky, nor by hope.
इत्यादिश्य सवर्णां सा तथेत्युक्ता सवर्णया
Thus instructed, she replied 'so be it' to Savarna.
पितः सोढुं न शक्नोमि तेजस्तेजोनिधेरहम्
Father, I am unable to endure your radiance, for I am born of the source of radiance.
निशम्योदीरितं तस्याः पित्रानिर्भर्त्सिता बहु
Hearing her words, her father harshly rebuked her in many ways.
चिंतामवाप महतीं स्त्रीणां धिक्चेष्टितं त्विति
She fell into great anxiety, thinking, 'Shame on the conduct of women!'
स्वातंत्र्यं न क्वचित्स्त्रीणां धिगस्वातंत्र्यजीवितम्
'There is never independence for women; shame on a life of supposed independence.'
त्यक्तं भर्तृगृहं मौग्ध्याद्धंत दुवृर्त्तया मया
'Out of foolishness and wickedness, I have abandoned my husband's house.'
तत्रास्ति सा सवर्णा वै परिपूर्णमनोरथा
There indeed is Savarna, whose every desire is fulfilled.
ततोति चंडश्चंडाशुः पित्रोरतिभयंकरः
And her father is exceedingly fierce, terrifying in the extreme.
स्फुटं दृष्टं मयाद्येति स्वकरांगारकर्ष(र्प?)णम् ।। 4.1.17.
I have clearly seen today the drawing of burning coals by her own hand.
वयश्च प्रथमं चारु रूपं त्रैलोक्यकांक्षितम्
Her youth is at its prime, her beauty is charming, desired by the three worlds.
पतिश्च तादृक्सर्वज्ञो लोकचक्षुस्तमोपहः
Her husband is such—a knower of all, the eye of the world, dispeller of darkness.
मह्यं श्रेयः कथं वा स्यादिति सा परिचिंत्य च
She pondered, 'How might there be welfare for me?'
उत्तरांश्च कुरून्प्राप चरंती नीरसंतृणम् तपोबलेन तत्पत्युः सहिष्ये तेज इत्यलम्
Then, wandering through the northern Kurus, where the grass is tasteless, she resolved, 'By the power of my husband's austerity, I shall endure his radiance—enough!'
मन्यमानोथ तां संज्ञां सवर्णायां तदा रविः
Then, considering that thought in Savarna, the Sun—
शनैश्चरं द्वितीयं च सुतां भद्रां तृतीयिकाम्
—made Saturn his second child, and Bhadra the third daughter.
चकाराभ्यधिकं स्नेहं न तथा पूर्वजेष्वथ
He showed greater affection for her than for his previous wives.
कनिष्ठेष्वधिकं दृष्ट्वा सावर्ण्यादिषु नो यमः
Seeing greater merit among the younger ones, there is no judgment by Yama in the lineages beginning with Savarni.
पदा संतर्जयामास यमः संज्ञासरूपिणीम्
Yama threatened the embodiment of consciousness with his foot.
जिघांसता त्वया पाप मां यदंघ्रिः समुद्यतः 4.1.17.
O sinner, when you raised your foot to kill me, intending harm—
ततो भगवते शप्तुमुद्यते सा शशंस ह 4.1.17.
Then, as she was about to curse the Blessed Lord, she reported it.
देवौ तस्मादजायेतामश्विनौ भिषजांवरौ 4.1.17.
From them were born the two gods, the Ashvins, best among physicians.
श्रुत्वाऽध्यायमिमं पुण्यं ग्रहपीडा न जायते
Hearing this sacred chapter, one does not suffer affliction from planets.
अगस्तिरुवाच इति शृण्वन्कथां रम्यां शिवशर्माऽथ माथुरः
Agastya said: Thus, as he listened to the delightful tale, Shiva Sharma of Mathura—
नेत्रयोः प्राघुणी चक्रे ततः सप्तर्षिमंडलम्
He rubbed his eyes and then saw the constellation of the Seven Sages.
