मरीच्यत्र्यंगिरो मुख्याः सर्वे सृष्टिप्रवर्तकाः
Marīci, Atri, and Aṅgiras are foremost; all are initiators of creation.
सुतश्चांगिरसो नाम बुद्ध्या विबुधसत्तमः
And his son, named Aṅgiras, was the best among the wise by intellect.
वेदवेदार्थतत्त्वज्ञः कलासु कुशलोऽमलः
He knew the Vedas, their meanings, and the essence of truth; he was skilled in arts and pure.
हितोपदेष्टा हितकृदहितात्यहितः सदा
He was a giver of beneficial counsel, a doer of good, always favoring the beneficial and avoiding the harmful.
सर्वलक्षणसंभार संभृतो गुरुवत्सलः 4.1.17.
Endowed with all auspicious qualities, he was devoted to his teacher.
महल्लिंगं प्रतिष्ठाप्य शांभवं भूरिभावनः
Establishing the great liṅga of Śambhu, he performed abundant acts of devotion.
ततः प्रसन्नो भगवान्विश्वेशो विश्वभावनः
Then the Lord of all, Viśveśa, creator of the universe, became pleased.
प्रसन्नोस्मि वरं ब्रूहि यत्ते मनसि वर्तते
Pleased, he said, 'I am satisfied; speak your boon, whatever is in your mind.'
शुचिदत्त गृहीत महोपहृते हृतभक्तजनोद्धततापतते
O pure-hearted one, your great offering has been accepted; the suffering of devoted people has been removed.
ततसर्वहृदंबर वरदनते नतवृजिनमहावन दाहकृते
O remover of all sorrow from hearts, bestower of boons, destroyer of great forests of sin for those who bow to you,
निधनादि विवर्जितकृतनतिकृत्कृतिविहितमनोरथपन्नगभृत्
Free from end and beginning, you grant the fruits of worship, fulfilling the wishes of the devoted, O serpent-bearer.
त्रिजगन्मयरूपविरूपसुदृग्दृगुदंचनकुंचन कृतहुतभुक्
You are the form and formlessness of the three worlds, with beautiful and wondrous vision, who creates, protects, and withdraws the fire of sacrifice.
प्रसूताखिलभूतलसंवरणप्रणवध्वनिसौधसुधांशुधर
You are the source of all beings, the shelter of the earth, the nectar-rayed moon atop the mansion of the sacred syllable Om.
शिवदेव गिरीश महेश विभो विभवप्रद गिरिश शिवेशमृड
O god Śiva, lord of mountains, great lord, all-pervading, bestower of prosperity, lord of mountains, auspicious, compassionate one,
न कृतांत त एष बिभेभि हरप्रहराशु महाघममोघमते 4.1.17.
O destroyer of evil, you do not fear death; with your blows, you swiftly dispel great and terrible misfortune, O infallible-minded one.
विततेऽत्र जगत्यखिलेऽघहरं हर तोषणमेव परं गुणवन्
In this vast world, O Hara, destroyer of sin, your supreme delight is only in virtue.
इति स्तुत्वा महादेवं विररामांगिरः सुतः
Thus having praised the great god, the son of Aṅgiras became silent.
नाम्ना बृहस्पतिरिति ग्रहेष्वर्च्योभव द्विज
He became known as Bṛhaspati, the most honored among the planets, O twice-born one.
अस्माल्लिंगार्चनान्नित्यं जीवभूतोसि मे यतः
From the constant worship of this liṅga, you have become a living being for me.
वाचां प्रपंचैश्चतुरैर्निष्प्रपंचो यतः स्तुतः
Though praised by words and their fourfold expressions, you remain beyond all expression.
अस्य स्तोत्रस्य पठनादपि वागुदियाच्च यम्
By reciting this hymn, or by the excellence of speech, one attains that which is sought.
समुत्पन्ने महाकार्ये न स बुद्ध्या प्रहीयते
When a great undertaking arises, his intellect is not diminished.
अस्यस्तोत्रस्य पठनान्नियतं मम संनिधौ
By reciting this hymn in my presence, it is certain.
अदः स्तोत्रं पठञ्जंतुर्जातुपीडां ग्रहोद्भवाम्
Whoever recites this hymn dispels afflictions arising from planets.
नित्यं प्रातः समुत्थाय यः पठिष्यति मानवः 4.1.17.
Whoever, rising every morning, recites it continually, O man,
त्वत्प्रतिष्ठितलिंगस्य पूजां कृत्वा प्रयत्नतः
Having carefully performed worship of the liṅga established by you,
इति दत्त्वा वराञ्छंभुः पुनर्ब्रह्माणमाह्वयत्
Having granted these boons, Śambhu again called upon Brahmā.
तानागतान्समालोक्य शिवो व्रह्माणमब्रवीत्
Seeing them arrive, Śiva spoke to Brahmā.
गुरुं सर्वसुरेंद्राणां परितः स्वगुणैर्गुरुम्
The guru of all the lords of the gods, surrounded by his own virtues, is the guru.
अतीव धिषणाधीशो ममप्रीतोभविष्यति
The lord of supreme wisdom will become exceedingly dear to me.
