तदारभ्य च लोकेऽस्मिन्द्विजराजोधिपोभवत्
From that time onward, in this world, he became the king of the Brahmins.
सोमवारव्रतकृतः सोमपानरता नराः
Men who observe the vow of Monday and delight in drinking soma,
चंद्रेश्वरसमुत्पत्तिं तथा चांद्रमसं तपः
The origin of Candreśvara and likewise the austerity of the Moon-god.
अगस्तिरुवाच शिवशर्मणि शर्मकारिणीं प थि दिव्ये श्रमहारिणीं गणौ
Agastya said: To Śivaśarman, who brings happiness, on the divine path that removes toil, in the company of attendants—
अगस्तिरुवाच कथा विष्णुगणाभ्यां च कथितां शिवशर्मणे
Agastya said: The story was told by the attendants of Viṣṇu to Śivaśarman.
शिवशर्मोवाच उडुलोककथां ख्यातं विष्वगाख्यानकोविदौ
Śivaśarman said: The story of the lunar world is well known, and you two are skilled in narrating everything.
गणावूचतुः दक्षः प्रजाविनिर्माणे दक्षो जातः प्रजापतिः सर्वलावण्यरोहिण्यो रोहिणीप्रमुखाः शुभाः
The attendants said: Dakṣa, the progenitor, was born for the creation of beings; all the most beautiful Rohiṇīs, with Rohiṇī at their head, were auspicious.
ताभिस्तप्त्वा तपस्तीव्रं प्राप्य वैश्वेश्वरीं पुरीम्
Having performed intense austerity with them, he attained the city of Viśveśvarī.
यदा तुष्टोयमीशानो दातुं वरमथाययौ
When the Lord was pleased, he came to grant a boon.
शंभोर्वाक्यमथाकर्ण्य ऊचुस्ताश्च कुमारिकाः
Hearing the words of Śambhu, those maidens spoke.
भवतोपि महादेव भवतापहरो हि यः
O Mahādeva, you are the remover of suffering.
लिंगं संस्थाप्य सुमहन्नक्षत्रेश्वर संज्ञितम् ।। वारणायास्तटे रम्ये संगमेश्वरसन्निधौ
Establishing a great liṅga called Nakṣatreśvara on the beautiful bank of the Vāraṇā, in the presence of Saṃgameśvara—
दिव्यं वर्ष सहस्रं तु पुरुषायितसंज्ञितम् 4.1.15.
For a divine thousand years, it was known as Puruṣāyita.
ततस्तुष्टो हि विश्वेशो व्यतरद्वरमुत्तमम्
Then, when Viśveśa was pleased, he granted the highest boon.
श्री विश्वेश्वर उवाच न क्षांतं हि तपोत्युग्रमेतदन्याभिरीदृशम्
Śrī Viśveśvara said: Such intense austerity as this has not been endured by others.
पुरुषायितसंज्ञेन तप्तं यत्तपसाधुना
By the austerity called Puruṣāyita, which was performed in a holy manner—
ज्योतिश्चक्रे समस्तेऽस्मिन्नग्रगण्या भविष्यथ
In this entire circle of luminaries, you shall become foremost.
ओषधीनां सुधायाश्च ब्राह्मणानां च यः पतिः
He who is the lord of herbs, nectar, and of the Brāhmaṇas—
भवतीनामिदं लिंगं नक्षत्रेश्वर संज्ञितम्
This liṅga of yours shall be known as Nakṣatreśvara.
उपरिष्टान्मृगांकस्य लोको वस्तु भविष्यति
Above the realm of the Moon, there shall be a world for you.
नक्षत्रपूजका ये च नक्षत्रव्रतचारिणः
Those who worship the stars and those who observe the vows related to the stars—
नक्षत्रग्रहराशीनां बाधास्तेषां कदाचन
For them, there is never any affliction from the stars, planets, or zodiac signs.
अगस्त्य उवाच अतिथित्वमवाप नेत्रयोर्बुधलोकः शिवशर्मणस्त्वथ 4.1.15.
Agastya said: Budhaloka, the son of Shivaśarman, became a guest in the presence of Netrayor.
शिवशर्मोवाच कस्य लोकोयमतुलो ब्रूतं श्रीभगवद्गणौ
Śivaśarman said: Of whom is this world incomparable? Tell me, O revered Lord of the Gaṇas.
स्वर्गमार्गविनोदाय तापत्रयविनाशिनीम्
For the delight of the path to heaven and the destruction of the threefold miseries—
योसौ पूर्वं महाकांतिरावाभ्यां परिवर्णितः
He who was previously described by us both as possessing great splendor—
दक्षिणा राजसूयस्य येन त्रिभुवनं कृता
By whom, as the fee for the Rājasūya sacrifice, the three worlds were made—
अत्रिनेत्रसमुद्भूतः पौत्रो वै द्रुहिणस्य यः
Who was born from the eye of Atri, and is indeed the grandson of Brahmā—
निर्मलानां कलानां च शेवधिर्यश्च गीयते
Who is sung as the treasure-house of pure rays—
मुदंकुमुदिनीनांयस्तनोति जगता सह
Who brings joy to the lotuses along with the world—
