श्रुत्वा तथा स वृत्तांतं प्राक्तनं स्वं विनिंद्य च
Hearing thus the account of what had happened, and blaming himself for his past,
चिंतामवाप महतीं क्व यामि करवाणि किम्
He fell into great anxiety: 'Where shall I go, what shall I do?'
देशांतरे ह्यस्ति धनः सद्विद्यः सुखमेधते
In another land, there is wealth, true knowledge, and happiness to be gained.
यायजूके कुले जन्म क्वक्व मे व्यसनं तथा
Birth in a family of sacrificers—where, then, is my misfortune?
भिक्षितुं नाधिगच्छामि न मे परिचितः क्वचित्
I do not find anyone to beg from, nor is there anyone familiar to me anywhere.
सदाभ्युदिते भानौ प्रसूर्मे मृष्टभोजनम्
Whenever the sun rises, my mother serves me well-cooked food.
इति चिंतयतस्तस्य भानुरस्ताचलं गतः
As he was thinking thus, the sun went down behind the western mountain.
महोपहारानादाय नगराद्बहिरभ्यगात्
He took great offerings and went out from the city.
पक्वान्नगंधमाघ्राय क्षुधितः स तमन्वगात् 4.1.13.
Smelling the aroma of cooked food, hungry, he followed him.
पलायमानो निहतः क्षणात्पंचत्वमागतः
Fleeing, he was struck down and in a moment met his death.
कुलाचारप्रतीपोयं पित्रोर्वाक्यपराङ्मुखः 4.1.13.
He opposes the customs of his family and turns his back on his parents' words.
कलिंगराजोभविताऽधुनाविधुतकल्मषः 4.1.13.
The king of Kaliṅga will now become free from all sin.
स्वार्थदीपदशोद्योत लिंगमौलि तमोहरः 4.1.13.
A lamp of self-interest, a sign upon the crest, a dispeller of darkness.
तावत्तताप स तपस्त्वगस्थिपरिशेषितम् 4.1.13.
He practiced austerity for so long that only skin and bones remained.
क्रूरदृग्वीक्षते यावत्पुनःपुनरिदं वदन् 4.1.13.
He looked with cruel eyes, repeatedly saying this.
देवेन दत्ता ये तुभ्यं वराः संतु तथैव ते 4.1.13.
The boons given to you by the god shall remain just as they are.
पुर्यां यक्षेश्वराणां ते स्वरूपमिति वर्णितम्
In the city, the forms of the lords of the Yakṣas are described as such.
अलकायाः पुरोभागे पूरैशानीमहोदया
Before Alakā, to the northeast, rises the great mountain.
शिवस्मरणसंसक्ताः शिवव्रतपरायणाः
Absorbed in the remembrance of Śiva, devoted to the vows of Śiva.
साभिलाषास्तपस्यंति स्वर्गभोगोस्त्वितीह नः
They practice austerity with longing, but for us, heavenly pleasures are not desired here.
अजैकपादहिर्बुध्न्य मुख्या एकादशापि वै
Ajaikapada, Ahirbudhnya, and the principal eleven indeed—
पुर्यष्टकं च दुष्टेभ्यो देवध्रुग्भ्यो ह्यवंति ते
And the eightfold city, from the wicked and those hostile to the gods, they protect.
एतैरपि तपस्तप्तं प्राप्य वाराणसीं पुरीम्
By these also, austerity was performed, and having reached the city of Varanasi—
ईशानेश प्रसादेन दिश्यैश्यां हि दिगीश्वराः
By the grace of Ishana, they became lords of the directions.
भालनेत्रा नीलगलाः शुद्धांगा वृषभध्वजाः
With a third eye on the forehead, blue-throated, pure-bodied, bearing the bull-banner—
तेऽस्यां पुरि वसंत्यैश्यां सर्वभोगसमृद्धयः
They dwell in this city, possessing all enjoyments and prosperity.
विपन्नास्तेन पुण्येन जायंते ऽत्रपुरोहिताः 4.1.14.
Those who have fallen from merit are born here as priests.
त एव रुद्रा विज्ञेया इहामुत्राप्यसंशयम्
These indeed are to be known as Rudras, here and hereafter, without doubt.
उपोष्यभूतांयांकांचिन्न नरो गर्भभाक्पुनः
Having fasted on the fourteenth, no man is again born in a womb.
शिवशर्मा दिवाप्युच्चैरपश्यच्चंद्रचंद्रिकाम्
