ब्राह्मणानां धनं पुत्र सद्विद्या साधुसंगमः
For Brahmins, wealth is good learning and association with the virtuous.
इति रूढिमिह प्राप्तास्तव पूर्वपितामहाः
Thus, your forefathers attained renown here.
सद्विद्या सुमनो धेहि ब्राह्मणाचारमाचर
Cherish good learning, cultivate the conduct of a Brahmin.
ऊनविंशतिकोऽसि त्वमेषा षोडशवार्षिकी
You are not yet nineteen; she is sixteen years old.
एतां संवृणु सद्वृत्तां पितृभक्तियुता भव
Choose this virtuous girl; be devoted to your father.
ततोऽपत्रपसे किं न त्यज दुर्वृत्ततां शिशो
Then, why are you ashamed? Child, abandon your bad conduct.
तेभ्योपि न बिभेषि त्वं शुद्धोस्युभय वंशतः
Even from them you do not feel fear; you are pure, descended from both lineages.
गृहेपि शिष्यान्पश्यैतान्पितुस्ते विनयोचितान्
Even at home, see these disciples of your father, who are proper in their conduct.
श्रद्धां विहाय ते ताते वृत्तिलोपं करिष्यति 4.1.13.
If you abandon faith, my son, you will bring about the loss of livelihood.
अनंतरं हसिष्यंति युक्तं दीक्षिततास्त्विति
Immediately they will laugh, saying, 'This is fitting for one who is initiated.'
मातुश्चरित्रं तनयो धत्ते दुर्भाषणैरिति
It is said that a son bears his mother's character through harsh words.
तदंघ्रिलीनमनसो मम साक्षी महेश्वरः
Maheshvara is my witness, as my mind is absorbed at his feet.
अहो बलीयान्सविधिर्येन जाता भवानिति
Ah, how powerful is fate, by which you have been born.
न तत्याज च तद्धर्मं दुर्बोधो व्यसनी यतः
He did not abandon that difficult-to-understand dharma, for he was addicted.
सपारदारैर्व्यसनैरेभिः कोत्र न खंडितः
Who among those addicted to others' wives and these vices has not been ruined?
अर्पयेद्द्यूतकाराणां सकुप्यं वसनादिकम्
He would give the gamblers, in anger, clothing and other possessions.
स्वपंत्यास्त्वेकदाऽऽदाय दुरोदरिकरेऽर्पयत्
Once, taking his wife's garment, he gave it to a distant gambler.
दीक्षितेन परिज्ञाता दैवाद्द्यूतकृतः करे पृष्टस्तेनाथ निर्बंधादसकृत्प्रत्युवाच किम्
Recognized by the initiated as a gambler by fate, he was questioned repeatedly, 'Why?'
ममाक्षिपसि विप्रोच्चैः किं मया चौर्य कर्मणा 4.1.13.
You loudly accuse me, O Brahmin—what theft have I committed?
मम मातुर्हि पूर्वे द्युर्जित्वानीतो हि शाटकः
For my mother, in former times, a garment was won in gambling and brought.
अन्येषां द्यूतकर्तृणां भूरि तेनार्पितं वसु
Much wealth was given by him to other gamblers.
भाजनानि विचित्राणि कांस्य ताम्रमयानि च
Various vessels, made of bronze and copper as well.
न तेन सदृशः कश्चिदाक्षिको भूमिमंडले
No gambler on earth was his equal.
कथं नाज्ञायि तनयो ऽविनयानयकोविदः
How was the son, skilled in improper conduct, not recognized?
प्रावृत्य वाससा मौलिं प्राविशन्निजमंदिरम्
Wrapping his head with a cloth, he entered his own house.
दीक्षितायिनि कुत्रासि क्व ते गुणनिधिः सुतः
O Dīkṣitāyinī, where are you? Where is your son, the treasure of virtues?
अंगोद्वर्तन काले या त्वया मेंऽगुलितो हृता
At the time of anointing my limbs, the ring that you took from me—
इति श्रुत्वाथ तद्वाक्यं भीता सा दीक्षितायिनी
Hearing these words, Dīkṣitāyinī became afraid.
व्यग्रास्मि देवपूजार्थमुपहारादि कर्मणि 4.1.13.
I was occupied with the worship of the gods and the tasks of preparing offerings.
इदानीमेव पक्वान्नकरणव्यग्रया मया
Just now I was busy making cooked food.
