रसवंति सुगंधीनि हिमवंति तपर्तुषु
Those who provide fragrant, juicy, and cooling things during times of intense heat.
इक्षुक्षेत्राणि संकल्प्य ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददत्यपि
Those who dedicate sugarcane fields and give them to Brahmins, even by resolve.
गोरसानां प्रदातारस्तथा गोमहिषीप्रदाः
Those who give cow products, and those who give cows and buffaloes.
देवालयेषु ये दद्युर्बहुधारागलंतिकाः
Those who offer abundant streams of water in temples.
अभयं ये प्रयच्छंति भयार्तोद्यत पाणयः
Those who grant safety to the fearful, whose hands are raised in distress.
विपाशयंति ये पुण्या दुर्वृतैः कंठपाशितान्
Those virtuous ones who release the wicked bound by ropes around their necks.
नौकाद्युपायैर्न द्यादौ पांथान्ये तारयंत्यपि
Those who ferry travelers across rivers by means such as boats and rafts.
घट्टान्पुण्यतटिन्यादेर्बंधयंति शिलादिभिः
Those who build steps of stone and other materials on the banks of sacred rivers.
वितर्पयंति ये पुण्यास्तृषिताञ्शीतलैर्जलैः 4.1.12.
Those virtuous ones who quench the thirst of the thirsty with cool waters.
जलाशयानां सर्वेषामयमेकतमः पतिः
Among all bodies of water, this one is the lord of them all.
अस्योत्पत्तिं शृणु पतेर्वरुणस्यमहात्मनः
Hear the origin of this lord, Varuṇa, the great soul.
शुचिष्मानिति विख्यातस्तनयो विनयोचितः
His son, renowned as Śuciṣmān, was upright and humble.
अच्छोदे सरसि स्नातुं स गतो बालकैः सह
He went to bathe in the lake Acchoda, together with the boys.
ततस्तस्मिन्मुनिसुते हृतेऽत्याहितशंसिभिः
Then, when the sage’s son was taken away by those bearing ill tidings,
हरार्चनोपविष्टस्य समाधौ निश्चलात्मनः
While seated in worship of Hara, absorbed in meditation with a steady mind,
अधिकं शीलयामास स सर्वज्ञं त्रिलोचनम्
He practiced greater discipline toward the all-knowing, three-eyed one.
नाना भूतानि भूतानि ब्रह्मांडांतर्गतानि च
Various beings, and all creatures, as well as those within the cosmic egg,
समुद्रानंतरीयाणि ह्यरण्यानीस्सरांसि च
the oceans, the rivers flowing within them, the forests, and the lakes,
वापीकूपतडागानि कुल्याः पुष्करिणीर्बहु 4.1.12.
ponds, wells, reservoirs, channels, and many lotus-filled pools,
बहून्मुनिकुमारांश्च मज्जनोन्मज्जनादिभिः
and many young sages, engaged in acts of immersion and emergence,
करताडितपानीयशब्ददिङ्मुखनादिभिः
with the sounds of water struck by hands, and the cries from every direction,
तेषां मध्ये ददर्शाथ समाधिस्थः स कर्दमः
Among them, Kardama, absorbed in meditation, beheld all this.
कयाचिज्जलदेव्याथ तस्माच्चक्रूरयादसः
Then, by some goddess of the waters, a cruel aquatic being was sent forth from there.
निर्भर्त्स्य सरितांनाथं केनचिद्रुद्ररूपिणा
That fierce being, taking the form of Rudra, rebuked the lord of the rivers.
कुतो जलानामधिप शिवभक्तस्य बालकः
"How, O lord of the waters, could you harm a child devoted to Shiva?
अज्ञात्वा शिवसामर्थ्यं भवताचिरमासितः
Not knowing Shiva’s power, you have acted rashly.
बालं रत्नैरलंकृत्य बद्ध्वा तं शिशुमारकम्
Adorning the boy with jewels, they bound that little crocodile.
नत्वा विज्ञापयत्तं च नापराध्याम्यहं विभो
Bowing down, he addressed him: 'O Lord, I have not committed any offense.'
भक्तकल्पतरो शंभोऽनेनायं दुष्टयादसा 4.1.12.
"O Shambhu, wish-fulfilling tree for devotees, by this wicked aquatic creature—
गणेन तेन विज्ञाय शंभोरथ मनोगतम्
